E46 3 series were much better than the 5's and 7's for most of their concerns. off the top of my head, if it is a 5spd, get ready for a clutch, if the ball joints have not been replaced(2hrs/side (300.00+), and control arm bushings (4hrs/500.00+), belts (1hr/200.00+)at this time. (have this checked out) minor problems with the cooling sys components should have been taken care of. o2 sensor faults sometimes- remember there is a 8yr 100k service warranty on emmisions. minor stuff- usually the radio and cluster will pixelate (1hr r+r, cluster +/-300.00), the button on the radio may loose its stiff feeling and become soft and may not even work after a while.(1hr r+r/300.00+/-) also check the sunroof shade, they come off track easily, and the sunroof cassets have a lot of issues and have already probably been replaced once, ha ha.(repair 1.5hr,(200.00+] r+r cassete 8hrs, 1k+) have also noticed the backlash on these cars can be bad, but bmw says its ok. being a tech, this is annoying as hell because all you hear when you take off is ca-clunk ca-clunk.... anyways, E46 is a good car. can cost a bit for maintenence and repair though. (brakes +/- 400.00)

good luck
