Default Cheaper to build than buy?

Is it cheaper to buy a sub woofer and build the enclosure to fit exactly in my boot than to buy a per-built unit?

It's going to get installed at the boot of a 93" Toyota Corolla.

Cheaper? Yes. Sound better? Yes. Especially if built right.

Materials for a nice box will be less that $100. To buy a quality custom sub box will cost ~$300+.

I vote a 200-400 watt 8 or 9 inch sub, with an amp rated about 50-100 watts above what the sub can handle.

And that's continuous, not peak.

You'll get good quality sound, loud enough to overpower the annoying noises you wish to, yet it won't be so loud that all you hear is "THUMP THUUUUUMPTHUMPTHUMP THUUUUUMP".

My rigs:

1985 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci OHV inline six | 4-speed OD manual | 310K | No power brakes | Running 100% - It hasn't driven this good in 15 years!

1984 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci six | granny four | 3.55 rear end | 210K | Brakes shot. Rear drums are doing most of the work. Not fit to drive due to that.
1997 Ford Explorer XLT | 4.0L Vulcan V6 | 5-speed automatic | shift-on-the-fly 4WD | 210,000 miles | Running 95% - Needs brakes on all four corners + bald tires
1989 Ford F150 | 300cid six...again | 5-speed | 4x4 | 160K | Needs brakes done as well. Oi!

What you should get is totally dependent on your tastes. How loud you want it, how clean and tight you want it to sound, your budget, how much space you have.... these are all things for you to decide.
