Default New speakers for the Honda

Ok first up I know the stock size is bad, I know there are serious limitations here. But I want quality sound, ideally 2 or 3 way, with whatever possible bass we can. The stock speakers are just terrible, so anything is better. The front speakers are 5.25in the rears are 4in, I hear 6.5in can fit, but this is only ok if you can find me adapters that will specifically fit, I am not cutting it apart for a few inches of speaker.

Two quick tips I picked up during my brief foray into the audiophile's world of music:

Going to 6.5'' components, specifically those with a separate crossover unit is almost always preferred to anything available in 5.25'' form; that is unless we're dealing with Focal's or some other high end stuff.

And, upgrading the front speakers and tuning the rear speakers out via the head unit works wonders for sound quality and to bring the "sound stage" forward. In fact, many of the pro audiophile's I spoke with use only the front speakers and remove the rear units entirely.

I had a pair of $50 2-way Pheonix Gold RSD65CS components in my Jeep and they were really quite good all around speakers. They had enough bass to blur my rearview mirrors, yet enough clarity that classical music was nearly on par with my $150 Sennheiser headphones. The downside is that the 6.5's are no longer available new, though they can be found as new-old stock or used from time to time on ebay.

I need to go back out and look, but if it required destroying/cutting apart the panel behind the speaker grill, I just don't want to do that. Also I wouldn't remove the rears as we have kids who sit in the back. At some point I plan on adding the dvd system again and it will use IR headphones and the stock speakers.

Any decent pair of of 5.25" components up front, and a matching set of coaxials for the rear should do well for you. I dont think you need to go crazy or anything. Polk, Infinity, Morel, Focal, Hertz, DLS, CDT, and MB quart are all good companies to look at. They all make great speakers and offer a budget line.

That being said, what is your budget, and secondly what music do you listen to other than childs stuff?

Everything...a lot of what you would find on The Hot 100 : Page 1 | Billboard

But also things way outside those, like Johnny Cash, Aerosmith, Rammstein, Beach Boys, Even some 80s music.

I am hoping to be in at $100 but more or less for quality is worth it to me.

Take a look into polk audio, and infinity for starters.

Front:

Rear:

OR

Infinity Reference 4022i Full Range Car Speakers at Onlinecarstereo.com

A bit better speakers:

Front:

Amazon.com: HERTZ DSK 130 5 1/4" 2-Way Component Car Speaker System DSK130: Electronics Amazon.com: HERTZ DSK 130 5 1/4" 2-Way Component Car Speaker System DSK130: Electronics

OR

Amazon.com: Morel Maximo 5.25-Inch Component Speaker System: Electronics Amazon.com: Morel Maximo 5.25-Inch Component Speaker System: Electronics

Rear:

Amazon.com: DCX 100 HERTZ 4" COAXIAL 2-WAY 60 W HI-ENERGY SPEAKERS BUILT IN TWEETERS NEW: Electronics Amazon.com: DCX 100 HERTZ 4" COAXIAL 2-WAY 60 W HI-ENERGY SPEAKERS BUILT IN TWEETERS NEW: Electronics

OR

Amazon.com: Morel Maximo 4C 4-Inch Coaxial Speakers: Electronics Amazon.com: Morel Maximo 4C 4-Inch Coaxial Speakers: Electronics

Ultimately any speaker you purchase would sound much better if powered by an external amplifier, though its not necessary.

I like those Hertz for the rear ones....and I was a big fan of the infinity Kappa II's I had in the wagon, they were only like 2.5in speakers and put out a ton of sound. I have heard some of their newer stuff and have been less impressed than those Kappa 2's. My wife's main complaint right now is lack of bass, the stock speakers start distorting bass as a pretty low volume, and by the time they are 75% as loud as the cobalts stock speakers they are completely distorted.(the cobalt has the factory Pioneer w/sub)

Well alot of the bass output is going to depend on the what enclosure the speaker has. If its just an open baffle in the door, i wouldnt expect much more bass, though i think you will have much less distortion from about any of the speakers i linked.
