Default Electrical gremlins from stereo

I'm trying to figure out some electrical gremlins that my stereo's experiencing.

Things have been fine with it for a while, but more recently the display will start flashing on and off intermittently (not at an interval, but sporadically)... more specifically, only the screen:

This always happens when I try to touch any of the buttons -- if I don't touch it, it's totally fine. When it flashes off, the buttons won't work but will stay illuminated.

I initially suspected some crappy wiring. It had been totally fine for about a month until this started happening so I re-did the wiring harness with solder and shrink wrap. It was fine for about 5 minutes before it started doing it again.

The strange thing is, when I pull it out of the console but with everything connected, it will function fine again. Only when it's in the console will it start freaking out.

Any ideas what could be going on?

A member on another forum suggested I detach and re-attach the face place a few times, citing possible dirty contacts. That seems to have done the trick. Will report back if it comes back.

We used to see these problems with the older pioneers, but any face plate removable radio is susceptible to it. It caused by the contacts being loose in the face plate. We had to take the face plate apart, and tighten down the display board, then reassemble. Its hard to explain in writing... ill try to find a how to with pics...
