Default i need help on setting a basic audio system up!

hi! im brand new to this forum, and cars really, and have never done this kind of thing before so i am in need of some help lol

i have just obtained an aiwa CDC-R237 head unit for my car and im waiting for the lead (PC3-433) to come so i can put it in my car.
I have no idea what the head unit in my car now is but its probably factory fitted which means its about 16 years old lol
anyway, i've just fitted some JVC dual cone 4 inch 100W speakers in my doors. I am hoping to replace these in a couple of months or so to some 5.5inch speakers but would this head unit and speaker combo go together?

now in a couple of weeks i am hoping to get a pair of 6x9s for my back shelf. ive got my eyes on some Kenwoods ones off ebay for £34. these are KFC-M6942A and are 4-way 450W.
now, 2 questions;
1) what does the 4-way bit mean?
2) would this system work?

thanks!

Sure, you can put the 5 inch speakers in .... I've never heard of 5.5inch though; do you mean 5.25" ?

I would not go for the 4way Kenwood speakers. 4 Way means that there are actually 4 drivers set up onto one speaker. You have the woofer to play the lows, a mid range which is probably about 1.25inches and then you probably have a 1 inch tweeter and then a .5inch super tweeter. You are going to have a hard time trying to find a 3, 4, or 5 way that will sound good, though. This is really just a gimmick to make people think the speaker is going to be really good sounding, but in reality, most 2-way speakers sound better.

Now, any kind of speaker would "work" with your system. You just need to do a bit of researching to find some quality speakers.

Some good brands that come to my mind that would run good off your newly acquired Cd player would be Infinity, Alpine, Polk, Rockford Fosgate, etc. What you would be looking for in a nice 2 way set that has fairly high "sensitivity" rating so it would run well off of your Cd player. Look for a sensitivity rating in the 90+ dB range.
What would probably be even better is finding a component set, which is the two woofers and two tweeters with two crossover networks. This would allow you to mount the woofers in your door and the tweeters in your pillars of the car, which would provide a nice sound stage. But, if you don't want to go through all of the trouble of mounting and all of that, just stick with the 2-way speakers.

okay, thanks alot!
there are 4 speakers on these speakers altogether. one big blue one (im guessing is the woofer) and 3 smaller ones over it (these are the tweakers im guessing).
so if i get a cone with only one speaker over it, this would sound better?
that does make sense lol i never knew what the little speakers were for but now i do!
do 2 way speakers cost more or less that 4 ways?

lol yeradid mean 5.25 inches!

Yeah the 2-way speaker just has one tweeter in the middle of the bigger woofer. The 3,4,5-ways are pretty much just gimmicks. Usually they are just cheapo speakers. 2 Ways that you are looking for would cost you anywhere between 60-120 USD...not sure how to convert that to your currency.

Here are some good ones that I found:

For my first car audio build, I used the Infinity Reference (used a different size 5x7 in my truck) and they sounded great. I had them running off of my Cd player and they sounded good, then later on, I got an amplifier and they sounded even better. The Infinity Kappa are a step up from the Reference, and also sound great. If they are only a couple more dollars where you live, then grab them up, since they are a pretty good improvement over the Reference. Oh, and the Alpine are also good. I used them in a friend's car.
