Default Subwoofer in an '89 Taurus

Yes, I want to put a sub in my granny-mobile. I have a JVC head unit, which is obviously not the stock radio, and it has a CD player. I am good with electronics, so I think I can handle this project no problem. I am just curious as to how I get this to work though. I know I need an amp, but does the amp hook into the radio directly or is there some tricky splicing that needs to be done? Also, could the sub be hooked directly into the radio?

You need to get an amp. Subs aren't gonna get enough power off the JVC head unit.

What is the model number of the JVC head unit? There should be some RCA wires on the back that you would plug a longer RCA wire to so that you could then connect an amp. The RCA connection on the back of the head unit is called a pre-out.

Also, how much are you looking to spend, and what kind of room do you have for the subs? What kind of music do you listen to? And do you have stock speakers or did you upgrade them when you got the JVC head unit?

I believe they are stock speakers, but the "premium sound" ones, which I guess are a basic upgrade at the dealership. The head unit is a JVC KD-G210. Not real fancy, but it does have a built-in amp, I guess. The "loud" setting makes the music stronger.

Good to know. Even premium speakers form a dealer are very basic paper cones, and are very basic. Its smart to add new aftermarket speaker when you add in a sub woofer, other wise the sub can often times drown out the rest of the music.

What are you trying to achive with the sub? What music do you listen to primarily? Do you want to crack the pavement, or just fill in the lows that your door speakers cant produce. Whats you maximum budget for everything, including installation parts?

My budget isn't very high, and I don't need a super thumping beast from hell. I listen to rock music (Disturbed, Staind, Chevelle, Korn, etc), so it's really just a matter of filling in the lows that my speakers can't do themselves. Not too powerful, but I want to be able to feel it some, not a whole lot though.

I'm really looking for, well, as low budget as I can. Like $300 for the whole setup.
