Question Quick question about head unit wiring

Hey guys, I wanted to completely upgrade the audio system in my car, so I came to this site (I'm a member of Overclock.net, that's how I found it).

I've never done anything to my car before, but I'm pretty good with the inside of a computer so I figured I could handle it. The guides here were super helpful, and I didn't even feel the need to post a thread until now. The problem is, I don't have a soldering iron, so I'm using butt connectors to connect the wires. I've been doing good so far, until I realized this current predicament.

The wire I'm having a problem with is from the new stereo and is Orange with a White stripe. I connected it with a wire from the other harness that's Orange with a White stripe. Easy enough, right?

Well the manual that came with the stereo says that's the Illumination wire, and the wire I connected it to says "Dimmer" along the side. Where I really got puzzled is that theres an Orange wire with NO stripe that says "Illumination/Dash Light". The plain Orange wire seems like it would be the wire to use, but the colors don't match.

Any suggestions? I've already crimped both of the Orange/White stripe wires together, so I don't want to cut the wires without being sure.

Thanks a ton in advance, this place is great.

I think I already got that, it's just when I'm splicing the wires together from the adapter to the new stereo wires I'm a bit confused.

I'd have to splice wires at one point anyway (it'd never be plug and play) because the harness that came with the stero has clipped wires on one end. And the fact that I've already connected every other one besides this problem one.

So do you think I should leave the "Illumination" (Orange/White Stripe) wire connected to the "Dimmer" (Orange/White Stripe) wire? Or start over and connect it with the "Illumination/Dash Light" (Orange) wire?

EDIT: Thanks for the quick reply btw.

what make/model car and radio do you have? The dimmer should have its own connection (dimmer) in car.. I THINK Illumination might go to your accessory power, I BELIEVE it does in mine. (so it lights up when your lights are on?)) I COULD BE WRONG.

'97 Jeep Cherokee, and I'm installing a Sony CDX-GT630UI stereo.

Either way I'd have a wire leftover from the OEM stereo, because the only 3 wires not in use on my aftermarket stereo harness are the "ATT" (Light Blue) wire which says its for a in-car telephone, the "AMP REM" (Blue/White Stripe) wire, and the black ground wire.

There is no Dimmer wire from my aftermarket harness, so either the Illum wire or the Dimmer from the OEM harness is going to get left without a connection.

your radio included the wiring harness correct? and do you have one for your jeep? (Is the one crutchfield.com recommends) http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1207018...e-Harness.html I haven't had mine out yet to check (the fact I have to replace my ENTIRE front dash (30 bucks of plastic). has kept me from looking.... Plus it takes over an hour to get to...

Yep, I'm using the harness that came with the stereo, and I got one exactly like that one when I bought the stereo at Fry's.

I THINK (this is a completely uneducated guess) that if you say the Dimmer wire is for dimming the lights when your car lights are off, I won't need it because maybe my stereo won't get dimmer/brighter when I toggle my headlights. I'm not sure, but could this be it?

Your radio should still work, but when your headlights go on, your buttons and screen won't light up (your screen might, my old one got dimmer for some reason).

Well it's either leave the Dimmer wire unconnected or the Illumination/Dash Lights wire unconnected, so I think I'll just connect the Illum wire and leave the dimmer unconnected and see what happens. Dimmer just sounds less important .
