The Long, Winding Road To Chevrolet's SS Sedan

After years of drama, the curtain all but comes off the next U.S.-bound Holden.
GM Inside News Forum
May 7, 2012
By: Nick Saporito

After being sold in North America as the Pontiac G8, the Australian derived Holden Commodore became the recipient of much fanfare for its rear-wheel drive chassis and V-8 power. Unfortunately the death of the Pontiac brand also led to the death of the Commodore in the U.S., but the rumors and speculation surrounding its return never died with it. Finally the speculation can subside and Commodore fans can rejoice at the return of an Australian automotive staple.

Back in October 2009 GMI was first told that GM executives were looking into ways of bringing back the Commodore to the U.S. Specifically, we were hearing from sources that Bob Lutz and other “car guy” executives at GM were wanting design mockups of a Cadillac flagship sedan built off of Holden’s rear-wheel drive platform, as well as a mainstream Chevrolet sedan.

Almost two years later the information was validated within the halls of GM’s Hollywood design studio. During a media event in November 2011 GM showcased dozens of real Cadillac mockups, many of which explicitly stated they were designed to ride on the Zeta platform. Unfortunately none of the stunning models were ever approved for production.

Nearly a year after the first report, GMI was told more detailed information regarding the rumored Commodore-based Chevrolet sedan. In fact, it was in this report that GMI first called the car it’s real name – two years before anyone else and over three years before the official announcement (which should take place next year). At the time sources were indicating that the car would arrive in 2012, which today we know is a bit early. As for the “Premium Zeta” mentioned in the report? It became what we know today as Omega, which is still in development.

By March 2011 GMI sources recommended we report on the “SS Sedan” with a new level of certainty, because “the car is going to happen.” With that level of assurance, we published that the car was operating as an approved program and that it would arrive in 2013 as a 2014 model, which still holds true today.

Fast forward to March 2012 and GM finally makes a public announcement that provides strong hints toward the SS Sedan. The announcement stated that the Impala would be dropped as the brand’s entry into NASCAR and replaced by an all-new sedan, which would be formally announced in 2013.

As if the NASCAR announcement was not enough confirmation of the SS Sedan, GM’s OnStar division flubbed and listed all compatible 2014 model-year products. On the list was the “Chevrolet SS Performance Sedan.”

Further Clarification

As the above exemplifies, the SS Sedan has not been a particularly easy product to follow. Throw in the fact that several mainstream automotive media outlets have absolutely screwed up facts surrounding Zeta and this car, it makes it a near chore to know what is going on. So let’s recap…

As of right now, the 2014 Chevrolet SS Performance Sedan will likely be revealed in early 2013 (earlier if we keep talking about). The car will be based on the Holden Commodore SS-V, the same car the Pontiac G8 was based off of. Some outlets have incorrectly reported that the SS will be based on the Caprice PPV, which is entirely false. The Caprice PPV has a longer wheelbase than the upcoming SS.

There is still some inconsistency regarding the time in which production of the SS Sedan will begin. GMI has been told to expect it on the North American market by late fall 2013, but production timelines have been inconsistent. Regardless of when production commences, the SS Sedan will be a very low-volume product in North America.

Throughout the rumors and speculation, GMI has always fairly consistently heard that the SS Sedan will be a V-8 only product. Even the name, SS Performance Sedan, suggests that this car will never see V-6 power. Expect the car to launch with the 6.2-liter LS3 V-8, the same engine that powered the ultra-rare Pontiac G8 GXP.
Unlike the G8, GMI expects the SS Sedan to come to North America with more equipment offerings. Holden’s iQ infotainment system is rumored to work in North American applications, which means even navigation should be an option on the SS Sedan.

As of today the SS Sedan has a future through 2015. GM’s future product plans beyond 2015 model-year are not firmed up, so it’s anyone’s guess beyond 2015. One thing GMI can do is confirm the inaccuracy of a recent report suggesting that a Zeta II platform is a done-deal. GM has made it very clear both in speech and action that they plan to reduce the number of platforms, specifically non-global ones like Zeta. GM’s rear-wheel drive plan contains two platforms: Alpha and Omega (in addition to Corvette's platform, of course).

At this time only the sedan is planned for North America. That isn’t to say a wagon and Ute could not be added later, but they are not on the horizon at this time.

Pontiac may be dead, but that brand launched a product that ended up serving as a conduit to more speculation and drama than any other GM product south of the fifth generation Camaro. As it turns out, the drama perhaps has paid off, because the Commodore is about to return

I hope they give it a less 2005 cobalt front end.....

Also I hope they throw the Camaro engines/transmissions in it.

That's a Pontiac G8 with a bowtie photoshopped on from the looks of it. Also, the LS3 is the Camaro/G8 GXP/base Corvette motor.

RWD? V8? Looks like that photoshop? Manual?

There might be a modern car in production that I like after all.

1984 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci six | granny four | 3.55 rear end | 210K | Brakes shot. Rear drums are doing most of the work. Not fit to drive due to that.
1997 Ford Explorer XLT | 4.0L Vulcan V6 | 5-speed automatic | shift-on-the-fly 4WD | 210,000 miles | Running 95% - Needs brakes on all four corners + bald tires
1989 Ford F150 | 300cid six...again | 5-speed | 4x4 | 160K | Needs brakes done as well. Oi!

Whats with car companies flubbing up names lately? The FR-s shoulda been a Celica Supra and this SS should be the new Impala or at least a Caprice...

They don't want it affiliated with caprice or impala it will be its own line. Probably because Impalas are selling pretty well and already have a SS model, and caprice is already made a PPV with a longer wheel base which is more fitting for the name.

Meh, I think its daft. SS isnt even a name...

Technically the Caprice is the Caprice PPV, just have this car be the regular Caprice and allow the PPV to distinguish the difference. Just like a regular vs. PI Crown Victoria.

Actually GM sold a few actual caprices last year when testing the PPV just to test the waters. I think it was like 100 or so.
