Default 1999 Tacoma 4x4

Isnt beauty in the eye of the beholder?

Heres how it is, June 2012:

Heres the story, are you sitting down? In July 2011 i was bored, wanted a truck, had no job, and had never purchased a car to be a daily driver, as my only previous vehicle is still under construction. My previous experiences contain aircooled old volkswagens. Only real similarity is the main pully on a vw block, and the wheel nut on the taco are both 36mm. WIN!

Anyways, i bought a 1999 Taco, SR5 (maybe?) TRD 4x4 extended cab. Two years older then i wanted, and black, not green but whatever.

I offered him to much, he took it after some thought and I was happy for about a week until i met up with a local group of tacoma enthusiasts, and they ripped it a new butthole. Below is a picture of stock, how it mostly sits now, and the list of whats been done, whats left, whats wanted, etc etc etc.

Here was week two, i spent some time cleaning it, and sprung for new tires, on both this, and the daily 66' my mom had let me use that i passed onto my sister. expensive week

Heres whats left on my dream list!
top end rebuild
headers
Tundra disc break conversion
decent fogs

Whats left to do (somewhat important):

Front spacers (1") to recover from sag!
steering rack bushings - theyve been ordered!
control arm bushings
3rd member seal
front diff seals and rebuild r/p
transfer case seals
tranny seals
flywheel
Lack of center console (ac) lighting, bad bulbs, cannot find proper ones
air bag light
gas tank filler neck seal, evidence of a ****ty body lift, and air breather mod once this is done.
Relocate transponder computer back to stock location.
make air intake a box + acquire stock ingen filter for my intake
4.56 nitro gears and bearings front/rear, sitting in boxes waiting!

Stuff ive done

07/11Passenger marker dirty contacts

Now for a few random pictures!

right after replacing balljoints, this happened. some of the bolts came loose and out, some sheared, it was awesome. no major damage apart from snapped brake line.

second or third month, i got into a slight fender bender. this pushed the side bumper bracket back. we pulled it out, to far. then cut back the frame rails to far as none of the instructions on the website (none were provided) said how much to cut. fortunatly my buddy works at a bronco offroad shop, but is a toyota nut and saved the day. everyone else is just watching us giving us ****.

Im also really good at narrowly avoiding accidents. came upon a 4 car pile up on highway, stopped about a foot away from rear most car, got lucky. week later i almost got t boned by a cop on the highway as he spun out.

Miles?

Not a bad taco but seems like a major lemon.

Coulda done worse, that's for sure.

On fixing the sag don't get spacers. Just get new springs. I know it's more expensive, but it's the 'right' way to do it. I'm facing the same issue on my '85 F150, after 26 years all four springs are made of butter, and it will continue to have buttersprings until I can afford new springs.

1985 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci OHV inline six | 4-speed OD manual | 310K | No power brakes | Running 100% - It hasn't driven this good in 15 years!

1984 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci six | granny four | 3.55 rear end | 210K | Brakes shot. Rear drums are doing most of the work. Not fit to drive due to that.
1997 Ford Explorer XLT | 4.0L Vulcan V6 | 5-speed automatic | shift-on-the-fly 4WD | 210,000 miles | Running 95% - Needs brakes on all four corners + bald tires
1989 Ford F150 | 300cid six...again | 5-speed | 4x4 | 160K | Needs brakes done as well. Oi!

Well, went to sierra expeditions today, and i have a few ideas on plans.

First idea, the coolest, least practical, is long travel front!

Next idea, is lower the rear a hair, and get full coils up front at about a 2" lift. my poor cv's will suffer no matter what.

the last idea, and the one i will eventually take, is a solid axle swap! really i want 4" of lift, but hate cv's. hate them. hate them. hate them. so solid d44 is the way to go.

No doubt that a SFA is a better setup than IFS..
