Default Restoration of a "beater"

I just bought a 1992 Ford Escort 1.6L V6 for 100 bucks with a lot of rust and other goodies (and a bad thermostat) so I'm going to fix it up and use it as my daily driver (I'm 17 and a piece of garbage is a better car than nothing!) so I figure I'd post what I end up doing on it, and if it doesn't work I'll just scrap it and make my money back. In case your wondering I know my cars (automotive classes tend to help

Anyway, I'll keep this updated as I go along.

Day one update: got the items I need to get the engine working better (read run) and its 65 bucks.. Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

the List:

6 BOSCH-PLATINUM_PLUS Spark Plugs
upper and lower KELLY_SPRINGFIELD radiator hoses
1 Fram Oil filter
1 STP Air Filter
Duralast High Temp thermostat
1 thermostat gasket (which she forgot when her boyfriend put it in)
gallon of Dexron III ATF Fluid (it says you need dexron for engine coolant, will this work?)
12.5 Lbs of MaxLife Synthetic 5W30. (I'm assuming this is a gallon)
Pair of mechanix gloves to save my hands (always ends up dry and cracked after a hard day work)

Theres been a lot of talk about fram oil filters really sucking. Evidently they us a cardboard flap on the inside, and that tends to disintegrate and go through your engine. So I would recommend changing it to at least something like a NAPA filter.

I prefer K&N or Mobile 1 filters....

But why the hell would you use Dexron ATF for coolant... That makes absolutely no sense! I wouldnt put anything but radiator fluid, in the radiator.

Oh, maybe it specifies Dex-cool, which is generally used in GM vehicles. Dex-cool, and other extended-life coolants gel up and harden when mixed with normal green coolant, so if you do use it, make sure you got every last bit of old coolant out of the system. It is a good idea to do a flush of the system anyways. Drain the system, fill with water, run engine until thermostat opens, to cycle coolant, drain again. Repeat until all that comes out of the engine is clear water. Then fill it with a 50/50 mix of the coolant of your choice and water. Keep in mind that there would still be a lot of water left in the passages in th block, so you may want to compensate for that by richening the mix a little. After having a bad experience with G11 (Essentially Dex-Cool, only used by German manufacturers), I performed the above flush, made sure water still flowed freely through my radiator, and filled it with Prestone bright green coolant, which BTW was labeled "Can mix with any color coolant". I do not intend to find out if its true. Havent had a problem since.

And Escorts did come with V6's back in the day (until 1995 i think)

NO they didnt!

these are the only 2 engines that came in the escorts from 1991 to 1996

Engines

* 1991-1996 1.9 L (1859 cc) CVH I4, 88 hp (66 kW) 108 ft·lbf (146 Nm)
* 1991-1996 1.8 L (1839 cc) Mazda B I4, 127 hp (95 kW) 114 ft·lbf (154 Nm) LX-E and GT

EDIT:Just looked into it a little more and there was no v6 ever available in any year Escort ever
