Default Gandalf's Kawasaki 440 LTD repair log

So yesterday I ordered a bunch of stuff, and started tearing the bike apart.

Done:
Removed gas tank, battery, and carbs
Replaced brittle and/or severed electrical wiring

Need to do:
Rebuild both carbs
Fix or replace gas tank (full of rusty grime and sand-like crap)
Repair misc vacuum and fuel lines (duct tape at first while I get everything running, then buy new lines where needed)
Buy air filter (filterbox is empty...hmmm...)
Replace chain

Bought:
Two carb rebuild kits - 2 x $25 (waiting to arrive)
Battery - $75
Also bought an armored SHIFT jacket, 2 HJC helmets and a pair of boots.
And downloaded a free complete repair guide in PDFs for the 440

I need an air filter (the filter box was empty when I got the bike) will this filter fit? NEW KAWASAKI 78 79 KZ400 80 81 KZ440 AIR FILTER CLEANER - eBay (item 120411314862 end time Apr-14-11 14:47:49 PDT)

Also, for those of you knowledgeable about Kawasakis, is the KZ440 the same as a 440 LTD? 'cause everywhere I look I can find KZ440 parts but not 440 LTD parts.

Buddy says they are just different trim packages of the same bike, air filters will be the same.

You're my new best friend.

OK, another question. My gas tank is full of gritty rust crap. Can I just cut a hole in the tank, clean it out, and weld it shut? Or do I need to buy a new tank?

Welding it would probably be a bad idea.
