Default 2003 Subaru Forester X

Hi,
Please tell me what you think I should ask for the following car, which needs to be sold by end of July in Boston.

* 2003 Subaru Forester X
* 31k miles (not a typo)
* Automatic
* Good condition with only minor scratches and dents
* No accidents
* Original owner
* Never smoked in
* Recent (12/2011) tires and battery

KBB puts the car at $11,200 but Edmunds only $6700. On Craigslist right now, others seem to be asking $6k - $7k for this car but those typically have > 100k mi on them. I posted it briefly for $7500 and got a lot of responses. They stopped when I upped the price to $10,700 though. What do you think?

I'd put it up for $9 and take $8500.

10700 is way too high. Yeah it's low mileage but plop down another few grand and that gets you a brand new car.

You say it only has minor scratches and dents, what dents are we talking? Dents at all are not good for resale value.

Nothing major - just dents from people opening doors into the car in parking lots over the years. Maybe I should just stick to scratches in the description from now on.

Thanks for the advice! Will try $9k I think next.

Ok so your selling a car that MSRP's for 21K new for half that after it's 10 years old. Ya on top of that not one of the better looking Subi's ever made. Edmunds has it right if you get 7K offer take it. Go ahead and ask 8K. When I looked it up on Kelly's it came up for 7300.

Well there is inflation and they don't cost $21k anymore but point taken. The KBB link is here btw:

Kelley Blue Book

Are you sure you entered the right mileage?

See the thing about mileage is I would rather have a well maintained high mileage car then a low mileage car. Most low mileage cars don't recieve maint like they should because owners believe oh I don't need to do this i'm not at the mileage yet. Fact is I don't believe any fluid should remain in a car more then 2 years. Low mileage cars are know for hard seal problems also which only tend to fail after they started recieving mileage like a average car.

True - in this case we haven't done the same maint because the dealer kept telling us it wasn't needed. I have been a bit pushy at times though. However, the interesting question isn't whether you would value a low mileage car, unless you're planning on buying it , but whether other buys would see things the way you do or if they would put a premium on it.
