Default Decent First Car with Cheap Insurance

So, if you look at my sig, you can see I like Imports. However, I know that some cars (like Supras) can have ridiculously high insurance costs.

I'm 19, still in college, probably living on my own from ehre on out (though I may stay on my parent's insurance while I can) and I know that all of those add up to crappy insurance rates. Just just want a car that gets decent gas mileages (somewhere in the 25+ MPG range) but can throw you back against the seat if you open it up. I also want for there to be some sort of upgrade avenue, whether it be exhaust, engine mods, etc.

I want a sporty car, but without the sporty car insurance rates. Do you guys think any of the cars in my sig would be significantly less to insure than the others? If not, then what sort of car may be cehaper to insure, but you guys think might tickle my fancy, based on the cars in my sig.

Thanks for any and all help, guys,

Subaru WRX?

They're surprisingly cheap on insurance. My mom has a Kia and it's $1300 a year IIRC for her, and my friends brother (22) has a Subaru WRX (2003, I think, if it matters) and it's "only" $250 more a month.

Looks nice, import, decent upgrade path, OK gas mileage (25 flat I'm guessing), and is pretty quick.

OK, I'm looking to spend probably around $10k on my first car. I already had my first accident in an 87 Dakota, so at least I shouldn't be quite as worried about totalling a really nice car. I've found a few Imrpezas in that range, a few SRT-4s, a lot of Integras, and a lot of GTI's.

I guess now it's just knowing what to look for as far as quality and such. Carfax reports, of course. And mileage, I was trying to shoot for under is that reasonable?

I would go for the GSR. The sky is the limit upgrading them as they are one of the most popular import tuning cars out there. The SRT-4 is pretty much out of the question. They are undeniably fast but the insurance on them for guys our age is ridiculous. Insurance companies hear the word turbocharger coupled with under 21 and go into full alert. GSRs are just great all around cars. Its strange but they feel faster than they are since they rev so quickly and have the crazy blitz to redline when vtec engages. Put an exhaust, headers, and cold air intake on it to start with and you have a bit of extra oomph. Later on down the line you can put on a Jackson Racing supercharger which are extremely affordable as superchargers go and have a street shredder.

If you put in an aftermarket turbo, would it still affect insurance?

If you tell your insurance company about it (which is a good idea) then yes.

You might also want to consider the nissan 240sx, its RWD and has lots of aftermarket parts for it, a lot of people have swapped out the engines in those with the sr20det engine (the one they put in them for the japanese market) and have souped them up to 500hp. An older mustang (late 80's or early 90's) would be fast too and they are RWD as well. However the insurance might be a little high for you and the gas mileage on the 5.0litre model probably isn't great. If you have to drive your car in the snow though, you are better off sticking with a FWD or AWD car.

I am not sure how bad the winters are where he lives in Pennsylvania but around here trying to drive a powerful rear wheel drive car throughout the winter is asking to get stuck or get into an accident especially if it is his first car. If I didn't live here in Montana that car I ended up with would have probably been a bit different.
