Question 2000 Jetta GL (?) -> 2008 Jetta SE

So my wife's 2000 Jetta has about 140k miles on it and I want her to have a reliable, safe car.

It has been awesome thus far with almost no maintenance for the life of the vehicle but now the breaks are getting a bit sketch and I dont want to put hundreds/thousands of dollars into a car worth maybe 1800.

So I am checking out a new Jetta for her and it seems pretty nice. It has all the features that she has now (Leatherette, Heated Seats, Moonroof, 6-disk changer, etc). Its got 5500 miles and was a demo.

Now I am wondering about a price to start negotiation. Frankly, I know squat about cars. If I was bidding on parts for a new computer, that would be a totally different matter, but this puts me out of my element.

The dealer is saying 19k but I know that's crock. What resources or estimates do you guys have for judging a good starting place for negotiation? What about my trade-in, fees associated with the deal, etc.

I know this is a very common question (e.g. Intel vs. AMD), but can you help a fellow out

UPDATE: Another dealer is saying a New 2009 Jetta SE for 18,800 + T,T,L. What's a good price to start at for "out the door". I dont like negotiating just price of the car, I want to bundle TTL so I know what my "out the door" price is. You think 16k is a good starting place? I really wanna be out for 17k and not a dime more. With VW rarely offering 0%APR on anything like a Jetta, I have to increase my down payment to make up fo rit.

So KBB says this car retails for about $17,300, so is that my starting point for negotiation or is that what the dealer should have thrown at me from the start? (READ UPDATE AT #1 FOR DEAL ON A NEW '09)

I'm pretty sure that's what the dealer should throw at you from the start.
