Default Haggling with salesmen

Hello all, finally came here from OCN. Even though I really don't need a new car I am looking into getting one in about a year or so. My current bucket has around 215k miles on it and it's the farthest thing from a chick magnet. I have yet to buy a car new from a dealership before and I know there's plenty of tricks on how to get a good deal.

Can someone give me tips on what to tell a salesmen at the dealer to get a good price? I have great credit to begin with (no outstanding debt) so that should help somewhat. The only 2 cars I can think of getting new would be a Mini Cooper S or a Lotus Elise. I'm seriously the pickiest person on Earth so NO, I don't want another car.

never accept the first price, play them at their own game,
if you know how to haggle, you can get some good deals.

Ask him about it and act interested but at the end just ask for his card and he should try to get your information. Then negotiate on the phone when he calls back. Just say oh yeah is this the one for $xx.xxx? If so I plan on coming in to work out financing next week. If he says no then say oh well I need to find that guys card then. Been to so many dealers this week. $xx.xxx should represent less than what you are planning on paying. Of course do this to every dealer . Then call the guy back and state that the other guy does not have the color you wanted and ask the dealer if he has X color or when he will get it. Then see if he can get it for X price. If no and its on the lot ask him what the lowest he will let it go for. And don't ever let them know you have a trade. When you step to the table again. say Oh I see why you are charging more. this one has X option. I really am not interested in that option. Is it possible to get rid of it. Or could it be scrubbed from the price? Alot of places order their cars with nicknacks already on them instead of adding them after. If you order a car without floormats you might get them just because they had the car on the lot. Know what the dealer paid for it. that way you can figure about what they will let it go for. do they have too many on the lot? is the new model coming out? that is the best time to get a car when the new model comes out. even if the cars are the same dealers dont like having 2006 cars on the lot with the 2007 cars.

Dealers will always tell you what you don't want to hear, regarding the cost of the car. As has already been stated earlier, start out low as far as the price goes. A good salesman will not want to tell you the price of the product untill he has 'sold' it to you in terms of what kit it has and what it goes/handles like. Also, when you are about to sign on the dotted line, and all that's holding you back is the price, be ready for the 'un-nerving' silence. The dealer will tell you his bottom price and then stay silent. The trick is, not to respond, because if you do, he has his product sold, at his price, and has you over a barrel!

Cash usually will change there minds... if its possible, get the cash for the car and you can save a few grand. But thats usualy not easy to do for a new car But works great for buying a used one!

Some times dealers would rather do a finance deal, as they can make more commision on it!

Ya but cash = straight profit for them cause they can just not claim taxes on it.

Awesome, you guys rock. I hope to drop a big down payment cuz I hate having a big monthly bill. Let's just say I buy a $40k car and drop like a $15-20k down payment making the loan for close to half the price of the car. Does that give me more room to drop the overall price? ...better start saving.

Sure does. Down payment is what will make the biggest difference in price.
