Default Reminder about links in signatures

In case you missed it in the Forum Rules & Terms Of Service, the rules are pretty simple: external links are not allowed in signatures. The only exceptions are to car clubs and approved links.

Anything else, like promoting websites for discount auto parts, car dealerships, selling car repair manuals, contests to win Lambos, etc. is not acceptable. If your external link gets removed, you might want to think twice before putting it back.

I think to OCN is fine because this is a daughter site.

Linking to OCN is ok since it is a sister site. If you're familiar with the ToS there you have it easy, since the ToS for OCN is about the same as here on carforum and for that matter on the dogforum.

Commercial links aren't ok. I am not trying to single anyone out, especially not solid longtime contributors like you pbasil. I figure since the new mods will be coming on board I want to make their lives easier and get the word out now about external links. That way everyone will hopefully be on the same page.

There are people who join and have no intention of contributing and stuff their signature full of commercial links, or they join with the intention of being a bona fide member and have commercial or website promotion links because they're used to it being ok elsewhere. The rules are the same for everyone - car clubs and approved links (like donate your car to the needy or OCN) are ok, everything isn't.

I don't know if this board has the option, but I MOD a forum where the option exists to only add links to their profiles are so many posts and so much time. Something like 15 posts and 30 days.

This has seriously reduced the link attempts because they have no option to add links. Some of course will still link in their posts. But it will discourage many.

This has gotten ridiculous, I'm guessing at most it is 1, maybe 2 people registering with name after name after name. There are two options here:

1) Do not allow any links in signatures, none whatsoever, and if you sign up and put a link in your signature, you are immediately banned.

2) Update the software so that you can't put links in the signatures to begin with, or remove the ability, at least temporarily, to even have signatures.

Something really needs to be done.

Well there is a "Paul*" who keeps registering over and over and trying to sell diagnostic software.

We aren't supposed to ban people immediately for links in signatures. Instead we're supposed to let them know that links aren't allowed and give them the chance to clean up and then if they don't we can ban them.

I started out by removing the signatures but lately I've been replacing them with a message to make it obvious what is going on.

I'm sure once the real guys get installed they can get a better handle on it.
