Lightbulb Mazda cx7 engine locked

I recently had my oil cooler replace on my Mazda. My car started smoking and then wouldn't restart. I returned my car to the same repair shop that replaced the oil cooler. They called informing me it was the starter after installing the starter they called back and said my engine was locked.
The mechanic first asked me when was the last time I put oil in my car. I said I am guessing when you fixed it a month ago. Needless to say they are not accepting responsibility. I am looking for answers how could this happen.

It's very possible that the engine burned through enough oil in a month to cause it to seize. I've seen this before.

What year, what engine?

I've had the 2.5 engines seize, with oil in them. Not good engines.
