Hey all! Just bought myself a 2000 Mustang GT Auto!
I'm completely pumped! For my first upgrade, I want to change the air intake. My question is, should I change out for a new cold air intake, a short ram intake, or an upgraded cold air intake with a short ram as well? |

Generally speaking, if you want a power upgrade you're gonna have to spend some dough. Most short ram air intakes and all its variants just give you the sound of an upgraded air intake .. but in reality although they do offer a much more free flowing design, their major downfall is the fact that they suck in warmer air from inside the engine bay .. so any increases you would've had due to volume increases are kinda negated by the fact that you're pulling in warm air.
That said, get an air intake that has a heat shield with it .. it'll allow much cooler air to get into your engine and give you a decent power boost along with the sweet sound an intake adds. With all that said, an air intake is a great place to start for the budget minded enthusiast. They're easy to install and relatively cheap.

Thanks for the reply!
I'll certainly get the heat shield. From what I was told however, the short ram creates a suction to pull more air in. If I was to place that right next to the engine, and then put the upgraded cold air intake over that, there would be suction PULLING more air into the already upgraded intake, so there would essentially be double the air. |

AM is your friend for our mustangs. that is one of the cheaper CAIs for GTs. They all do the same thing, which isnt that much except for creating more air flow. A GT (unlike the V6) will gain a decent amount of HP for a CAI (Cold Air Intake), about 10RWHP. The "best" CAIs are the ones that install into the fenderwell like .... http://www.americanmuscle.com/bbk-co...e-96-04gt.html Notice how it is made of aluminum with a chrome plating. Some people will say that its worse than a plastic one, which isnt really true. The air is not inside of the CAI long enough to be heated up much by the metal. Where it counts is where the air is drawn from. The fenderwell is A LOT cooler than the engine bay. Also a ram air kit, is expensive and not worth it. That is if you are talking about like the one on the Mach 1 Mustang. 'Ram Air' is the same thing as a normal CAI, and manufactors like to use it as a marketing word. Dont waste your money. Oh and the ram air kits, unless you are going 100mph all the time, dont create that much ramming action to justify the costs. Be careful who you listen to, ESPECIALLY on the internet about what mods are good or not. There are a lot of people who hear these things over and over again and have no real idea what they are talking about. And even in real life. I mean dont even take my word for it, do research. I know a good deal about mustangs, mostly V6s but GTs as well. So if you need any help I am here for you. Also your next mod, should probably get a Tuner like the SCT Xcal3. OR whatever tuner you local dynos support. They run about $400 brand new, dont buy them used as they are locked by vechile and people can easily cheat you out of money.

If I were you the very first thing I'd look to doing is upgrading the exhaust to let that engine breathe better. The stock exhaust on that V8 is quite restrictive, and any other mods that you, while they may improve the performance/power, are still going to be restricted by a certain percentage by how much the exhaust holds it back

Im happy about your car man. I think that you should go with the one that you think is best for the car and make sure it sounds good.

ALSO The GT exhaust system flows quiet well stock. It is hard to improve upon without spend a lot of $ for long tube headers. I would concentrate on the Air intake, or a tune. A CAI and a tune combo will net you a decent gain you can feel. BUT You can upgrade the muffles to something louder and more agressive, which may give you a placebo effect of feeling faster. And it will just sound bad to the bone.
