Default 98 Deville 4.6 Starting Problems

98 Deville 4.6. When trying to start, sometimes it would just click. After multiple tries, it would start. Battery connections seemed fine, so replaced the starter (under the intake manifold!) Still having the same problem. Is there anything else like a sensor or anything that could cause this? Only trouble codes are O2 codes and 2 codes I don't know about. P1253-H0251 insufficient switches bank 2, sensor 1 and P1133- H0251 Insufficient switches bank 1 sensor 1.

Thanks for the help!!!

Has the battery been checked? Under the plastic cap on the terminals is there corrosion? Is there corrosion in the positive Wire? What voltage does the battery have? It requires at least 10V to turn a starter. Using a Multi meter measure Voltage between battery positive terminal and starter pin B while cranking car. If voltage is less then .5V then replace starter if voltage is more then .5V then clean or replace Battery positive cable.

Ignition switch and starter relay can also be culprits.

Only problem is, the intake manifold and alot of other crap has to come off to access the starter. So, can't test voltage on starter while cranking... I'll double check batt voltage and voltage on batt while cranking as well as corrosion. Wish I just replaced the cable when I had it all off.

Any tips on how to test the relay? or should I just put a new one in...

If you take it to autozone/advance auto, etc they can run a couple basic tests without removing anything from the motor, it should tell you if you have insufficient power to the starter. (I'm having that issue right now with my 240sx, I'm pretty sure the terminals on the starter are worn down.)

How powerful of a click? Like a relay clicking or the starter ramming itself into the flywheel?

The wire has to enter the intake some were so IT can be tested up to that point. I would just relaxes the relay it should be replaced with the starter anyway. The az test won't tell you anything useful on this car without taking it off.

Ah, I concede to Lautin's greater wisdom. For my own curiosity, why is it different on his car?

I love Northstars, but the way they're set up is really strange sometimes..

On this car its under the intake the only test they can run is a generic starting test but all it will say is rating system normal if it starts its really generic.

lautinjr-nice goat by the way

It actually does a little more than just click. Acts like when your battery is about to die, it actually tuns a little, then stops like its struggling. After about 3-4 tries, it finally speeds up then starts. I took the battery to AZ, and they said it was fine, but I wonder. Left the multimeter on it over night and it only went from 12.8v to 12.77 this morning... Both ends of the cable looks new and no visible corrosion and a good connection.

The relay would only be on or off right? It wouldn't kind of work...
