Default $2000 budget -- used car...

Hey all, I'm looking to get a used car (obviously) for about $2000, which i know isnt alot, but im having trouble finding something with decent milage for something that price. 130,000 - 140,000 would be about the max milage I'd want for a used car.
I just need a car that will last me a while (im going to be a senior in high school next year) and is reliable and somewhat low-maintenance. I'm not too concerned with looks, but I like to keep it above the butt-ugly benchmark.
Any sedan, small SUV, or small stationwagon is great.
Thanks very much.

ok not a bad idea, but my parents probably wouldnt go for a camaro anyways...4-door sedans, like an OK pontiac might be a bad idea... any pros/cons you guys got on pontiacs? if you look on ebay theres tons of pontiacs in the 1000-2000 range.

A V6 Camero might not be a bad idea; you may like it more in the long run. A $2000 car can quickly become something you dislike (in my experience, and most others).

Have you looked around autotrader.com?

A used Grand Am can be a good start.

Well I dunno if I'd go with a camaro for a first car, seems kind of overkill. The dealship I got my truck from gave me a grand am to drive while they were doing the brakes on it, and I hated that car, felt like driving my truck with 1000lbs of dirt in it. They feel really heavy, and didn't have much go. I had an old beater 1990 jetta gli wolfsburg edition for a bit, it held up pretty well, the Canadian winters however have basically destroyed the body on it. You might wanna look at a diesel golf or something, good on gas and the engines tend to hold up for a long time. Another car that is ok is a toyota tercel or something like that, not flashy but hey you need it to work and to get from point A to point B, it should do that no problem.

Ok yeah, Camaro is probably not a great idea for a first car...the pontiac grand prix seems to be pretty good price wise, any idea what kind of milage is good and what kind of milage you dont want on a pontiac?

Depends on the year, I wasn't impressed with the grand am, it was kinda gutless and felt like I was drivin a lead coffin, the gas mileage was ok though, I think it was a 2005 model. Was able to drive around 200km with about 1/3 of a tank of gas. Here is a good link to check the mileage of various vechicles. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm
