Default Car in america

Basically the story goes, im going to hopefully live in america as a student for a couple of years next year, I've gone on holidays there quite a lot and I know that without a car you're pretty much just F*^£ed over there.

So I think I went on to a site like autotrader like we have in the UK but the american equivalent( New Cars, Used Cars - Find Cars at AutoTrader.com) and started to look at cars, I soon found out that cars in america are really expensive to buy. I didn't know what kind of budget I would need for a car, so I started to look at how much my car would cost in america( BMW 325i saloon/ sedan 2002 quite low mileage)
the price was something ridiculous like $13K. Plus the cheapest BMW started at 10K and those cars were a piece of s&*t, if I tried to sell my car in the UK I wouldn't get over £2K for it and I would be lucky to get £1800. So then I started looking at Audi A3s since my friend had recently bought one for £3K( pretty decent 2005 quite low mileage, all the bells and whistles you'd expect from audi) in the UK, again I looked at that site the equivalent nearing $16K and the cheapest one on offer was for $12.5K, ITS LIKE WTF, so then I thought it might be becuase its a german cars in america and the price of the import.
so I looked at Ford's since they are made over there, same story a piece of s&*t Ford I think that wouldn't go for £1K over here is costing near to $7k.

I need a couple of things answered:

1. WHY????
2. Does it matter what state you're in( Denver)
3. What would you recommend for a student with lets say $4K budget, what would be the best second hand car.
4. what makes are the best with a low budget in the US.

Thanks in advance for the help and advice!

Importing cars into America is not cheap with taxes and customs which can account for the higher prices of German cars. Also the demand for cars is much higher here. People actually need cars to get around while they are more of a convenience in the UK. You can find plenty of cheap prices though if you look on places like Craigslist (online classified)

I would browse through this list: denver cars & trucks - by owner classifieds - craigslist
Just post what interests you and we can help you decide.

BMWs aren't cheap cars. Simple as that. For $4000, however, you can get a decent enough vehicle.

HAHA! Thanks.

This is way better than any other car for under $4000...

1990 Ford Thunderbird SC Low Miles

It drives better than that BMW 3 Series of yours. The Thunderbird is one of the very few American cars with a fully independent suspension and rear wheel drive. The suspension design was actually ripped off from BMW.

Raptor, you have gotten me interested in driving a SC. If I had some disposable income I would have bought one by now even

I spent only five hundred dollars on a Ford and got a damn reliable, if beat up, daily driver out of it. You're not looking hard enough.

My rigs:

1985 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci OHV inline six | 4-speed OD manual | 310K | No power brakes | Running 100% - It hasn't driven this good in 15 years!

1984 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci six | granny four | 3.55 rear end | 210K | Brakes shot. Rear drums are doing most of the work. Not fit to drive due to that.
1997 Ford Explorer XLT | 4.0L Vulcan V6 | 5-speed automatic | shift-on-the-fly 4WD | 210,000 miles | Running 95% - Needs brakes on all four corners + bald tires
1989 Ford F150 | 300cid six...again | 5-speed | 4x4 | 160K | Needs brakes done as well. Oi!

Haha awesome. I've gotten more respect for the SCed Pontiacs too, they are like a Super Coupe with the engine sideways.

College students in America don't drive BMWs. It just doesn't happen.
