Default Epic Wife Fail: Cleaning a clogged engine

To make a long story short, my wife didnt change the oil in her 1998 Mercury Tracer for over 10,000 miles. When the "Service Engine Soon" light came on she decided to inform me that it was running rough.
I put Gunk engine flush in and let it run for double the specified time. I changed the oil and put fuel system cleaner into the gas. That alone caused the service light to turn off, however it came on again a day later and the idle is still a bit rough.
I read that it would be a good idea to change the PCV valve and tube and am planning on doing that tomorrow. I'm also going to have the code read for free at Autozone so I can better troubleshoot the vehicle.

In cases like this, what steps usually need to be taken to clean out the engine. What should be replaced? All your recommendations are appreciated. I dont really have the money to take it into a mechanic so I want to try to fix things myself if at all possible.

Thanks

Hi

Your engine flush probably cleaned the engine adequately.

On some cars the SES is the same as the CEL, and on other cars they have both. If the SES is what the check engine light is called on your car, then their is another problem as an over dure oil change won't make the light go on, and if it did, you need to "turn off" the light manually. A CEL will come and go as the PCM code is triggered.

Have it scanned and you will know better what the problem is.

OK, the light went off after the oil change. I'm changing the PCV valve/tube. ANything else I should consider doing while I'm in there?

How long has it been since the plugs and wires were changed? Running rough shouldnt have anything to do with the oil in the engine. Change the PCV valve, and you can just inspect/clean the PCV tube if need be, as long as it isnt clogged or cracked. Also, inspect/change the air filter, and while doing that take a look at the throttle body and if its dirty, grab a bottle of throttle body cleaner and give it a good cleaning. If the throttle body is very sooty/oily, thats a sign that there is a lot of blow-by from the cylinders, meaning worn rings or valve seats.
