the entire theory of a automatic is basicly it destroys itself as it works. it slips the clutches automaticly for you for smoother shifts just like you do in a standard. these clutches wear out just like in a standard. only differenceis since it's a series of multiple smaller clutches with much more total surface area then a regular clutch disc they last longer. although some don't seem to last much longer.

thats also why a manuel is better on gas less slipping is required for a smooth shift, and the trans engages fully all the time meaning more power makes it to the wheels more of the time. also engine power is used in alot of cases to actually do the shifting which takes away from performance. although modern autos have come so far that this isnt really true anymore.

This thread just made me realize something...oh boy not good haha. NOW I know why cars with manual have steady RPMs and automatics (w/ sport shift) fluctuate RPMs more.

The torque convertor is like jello between the engine and the transmission. It absorbs drivetrain impact, a cushion of sorts. A fair bit of "feel" is lost trough the torque convertor and in certain driving situations this lose of feel is not appreciated.
