Default Should I buy this car? Didnt pass the smog check

Hi!
I person that I know Is trying to sell his Mitsubishi Eclipse 1998.
But It hasn't been driven for 6 months or more probably.
He send me some pictures of why It didnt pass the test.

Is it even worth repairing.
He's trying to sell it for 900, He can probably go for less I don't know.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Holy crap California is strict....that thing would pass just fine where I am. The limit here is 220ppm HC.

As for whether or not it's a buy, that depends on the issue, really. It could be as simple as a fried cat or bad O2 sensor, or it could be as complex as toasted rings or a bad head gasket, and with a '98 that's reporting no signal from the O2 sensor there's no telling what kind of abuse it's gone through.

Is it showroom stock or has someone been under the hood?

1984 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci six | granny four | 3.55 rear end | 210K | Brakes shot. Rear drums are doing most of the work. Not fit to drive due to that.

1989 Ford F150 | 300cid six...again | 5-speed | 4x4 | 160K | Needs brakes done as well. Oi!

Well Idk I don't think anyone has touched the car for those 6 months.
It's been parked in outside, and he's selling it because he has another car...
So Idk.
Would the repair go over 200 bucks?
PD: Thanks for the fast response.

Doesn't matter how recent. I have never seen a modified Eclipse that wasn't a riced out pile of trash, and since the fault code reports the O2 sensor is disconnected I'm betting it's anything but stock.

And if it's not stock steer well clear.

Repair cost may vary. If it's just a broken wire on a stock car it won't cost much at all. If it's just disconnected you could fix it yourself in about five minutes for free. Bad sensor takes ~20 minutes to change, most of the cost is in the sensor itself. If it's modified you'll have to have a battery of tests run on it to make sure the engine is healthy internally, which some shops do and some shops don't charge for. This is because there's no telling what it's been through, the O2 sensor may have been unplugged to mask a deeper problem. It'd also be a good idea to have the electrical system gone through, for the same reasons.

Honestly I'd suggest steering clear of Eclipses in general, even stock models aren't all that good.

I'm assuming fuel economy is a concern...maybe you could find an old crown vic cop car in that range. That's what some of them auction for here. You could also do the tried-and-true civic idea, so long as the civic hasn't been modded either.
