Default Ashamed of driving a corolla

Hi all, I'd appreciate it if you could help me with a little dilemma I am having.
I am just about 20 years old and am going to university which is about 60km off from my house. Up until now my family has had only one car, and it is a 2000 Toyota Corolla. I think this is one of the worst cars on the road. My father has agreed to buy another car so he and I don't have timing conflicts with work and studies, but he insists that I drive his corolla while he buys something else.

Just recently he went to a car auction with his friend who is a car dealer and acquired a 2002 Hyundai Accent GS. After one trip, he told me that he isn't going to let me even touch that car, because "It accelerates too quickly, and stops too slowly". He went on and on about how its too light and yada yada, that to handle such a car at high speeds (I would have to travel on the freeway to get to my university) I would need experience and blah blah.

Well I am not one to come rolling up with loud music playing, neon underlights and GT style bumpers and skirts, but I really don't want to roll up in some cruddy corolla either =(. I am a young man and having a nice looking and performing car is good to have. I really wouldn't have minded driving that Hyundai (even though I think the back bumper is raised too high). Now he is going to go to another auction next month and get another car to replace the Hyundai (he is planning to sell it off for a profit on the internet), and I want to convince him to buy me something good.

Could some of you experienced drivers tell me if I'm just making a fuss out of nothing? Am I correct in saying that the corolla isn't the type of car you would see a "youngster" in, or am I just being silly about all this and should drive it?

I don't care what car I drive, as long as, I can get to work and school. Hell, I once came to my high school to pick up my sisters in my mom minivan. But if you really want another car, look for a 2000 or 2002 Nissan Maxima. Wow, that car is loaded and its fast! Excellent braking too.

A friend of mine has a Maxima sitting in his car lot ready to go for $4500. This is a 2000 model and damn the sucker is quick. Look around, I'm sure you'll find something to replace that Corolla.

If Nissan isn't suiting your tastes, look at the Mercury Cougar (I know, old car) or a Dodge Neon (pretty sure you can find one at or under $4k). Don't go for the base models either! I've driven a base model and an SRT-4 Neon... I know the engines are different, but jeez, just don't go for the base model.

You shouldn't be ashamed to drive a 2k Corolla (which is more of a Geo than anything); but hey, if you can get something with some sleek, I would try.

Base model just refers to the entry model version of a car; the one with the less amount of standard options.

I would actually look into the newer model Maxima's. The 1995 models were introduced with the VQ series engine, and have been recognized year after year as durable performance engines. I've driven my aunt's Maxima SE with a 6-speed manual (yes, a manual..they are somewhat rare to find) and it took off. You could also consider its luxury counterpart the Infiniti I35.

If your father believes that a Hyundai Accent is too fast of a car for you then your options are going to be pretty limited as even the new ones are slower than homemade sin. See if you can find an older 1993+ Acura Integra LS or GSR (the GSR is quite fast and damn fun to drive so it would probably be disqualified). The LS looks the same as any other Integra and most people consider them to be pretty good looking cars and while not exactly speed machines with a manual they aren't to bad.

Don't think I've ever heard the words "hyundai accent" and "fast", used in the same sentence before. What does your dad drive tractors or something? Anyways personally I'm not a fan of korean cars in general (apparently the 1st hyundai's were knock offs of early nissans, from a shipment that the koreans confiscated) and would actually take a corolla over and accent any day of the week. The brake issues are most likely the result of the brakes being bad on the car, nothing to do with the speed. The nissan 240sx's are nice cars, rear wheel drive, around 150hp stock, but won't handle well in the winter. You could also go with a honda civic or accord, VW jetta, golf or scirocco, might be able to get your hands on one of the older 5litre mustangs as well. But then again all the cars I've just listed are faster then an accent, so may be you might be better off just staying with the corolla for now. A few of my friends drive corollas, they are ok cars, reliable, good fuel mileage and get your from A to B just fine, and if thats all you are looking for then there is really no need to upgrade.

I'm driving an 02 Corolla at the moment (my trucks in the shop) and the mileage just goes down the toilet and then some when I turn on the A/C. It could be just that specific car, but I'm not liking it.

Overall, it is a hell of a lot more fun to drive than my truck. It's a lot lower and the wheelbase is shorter. Just last night, I pulled a left doing 35-30MPH. I used the foot brakes, and ripped the e-brake (just enough) at the same time and OMG!! I can never have that experience in my truck.
