Default The Chevy SS Discussion Thread

I'm sure many people besides me are excited about this car. I mean... RWD Full-Size Sedan with a Powerful V8.... awesome.
2014 Chevrolet SS Revives Rear-Wheel-Drive Tradition, Is A Sign Of Strength At GM - Forbes
"0 to 60 miles per hour in about five seconds."
"The SS has a V8 ... LS3 ... used in the 2013 Corvette. ... 6.2 liters ... 415 horsepower"

Personally, I really hope this succeeds. This could really bring a lot of people back to the American Market. Sure, this one is made in AUS, but the average Joe doesn't fully understand. Chevy, Ford, and Dodge make some solid cars that are being overlooked in favor of Japan and Korea's Market. I would love to see some more American cars. Creating a solid car with the Bowtie is a good place to start.

V8 in the front, manual in the middle, rear wheel drive at the back, no computers trying to tell me what to do? Sign me up! I'd probably hit it with a -1 rim package for ride comfort and a more sane AM/FM radio instead of that inane infotainment crap they've stuffed in the dash before. I don't care if it has bluetooth DVD playback in dolby 5.1 with satnav and room service built in, all I want is for the radio to hold 102.9FM.

My rigs:

1985 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci OHV inline six | 4-speed OD manual | 310K | No power brakes | Running 100% - It hasn't driven this good in 15 years!

1984 Ford F150 | 4x2 | 300ci six | granny four | 3.55 rear end | 210K | Brakes shot. Rear drums are doing most of the work. Not fit to drive due to that.
1997 Ford Explorer XLT | 4.0L Vulcan V6 | 5-speed automatic | shift-on-the-fly 4WD | 210,000 miles | Running 95% - Needs brakes on all four corners + bald tires
1989 Ford F150 | 300cid six...again | 5-speed | 4x4 | 160K | Needs brakes done as well. Oi!

Sorry to burst your bubble, the US is only getting the automatic.

Also, that would be awesome if it looked like the first pic, but it's just a render.

The production version unfortunately looks like a generic rental car. At least that makes it a good sleeper.

Personally? I'd much rather have a Charger SRT8. At least they actually sell that in Canada

Automatic is just fine. The new Auto's have minimal drivetrain loss and with a lot of drivers will actually accelerate faster. I mean, shifts faster than they do.

Wrong about what? I don't see anything there that contradicts what I said.

I hope they make a Rear-based AWD version if this gets enough attention.

No. Manual > Automatic for this car. What matters is smiles-per-mile, not how fast it can shift, and the smiles-per-mile is significantly higher when I'm rowing my own. I couldn't care less if the guy with the automatic can run to 60 a tenth quicker, I'll have more fun getting there, and that's the entire point behind buying a muscle car in the first place.

Don't get your hopes up. It's a rebadged Holden Monaro VXR, and that car never came so equipped. It's a muscle car, not a refined sports car.

Nope. It's a rebadged Holden VF Commodore. GTO was a Monaro. They don't make Monaros anymore. But it definitely won't ever be AWD.

As for automatic only, it's the reason I won't buy this car. Yes, DSGs these days can technically shift faster than manuals, but this has a 6L80 (or 6L90), neither of which are DSGs.

I'm hoping it gets a powertrain revision a year or two after it's introduced. Similar situation to the last gen GTOs. 2004 goats came with the dated LS1, revised in 2005 to get the LS2, a much improved powerplant.

Seeing as the LT1 isn't ready for primetime yet, I think they're putting the LS3 in as a stand-in. Maybe in 2015 we'll get an LT1 and 6 speed (or 7 speed) manual.
