Default 1999 Dodge Durango Dies when Idling

Sometimes my car just dies while it is idling in gear. It doesn't die when I am actually on the road or giving it gas, but it likes to quit in the parking lot when I am idling through the aisles.

with the durango, it could be so many things. if the check engine comes on, start with that. if not. you're in for a game of guessing and replacing.

how old are your plugs and wires? What about Fuel Filter? Air Filter? try these, and also did you do anything recently in terms of modification or changes? good place to start

Plugs and wires are fine, fuel filter I dont know about, the air filter has been changed recently.

The engine knocks when it is idling too, but sometimes if we put premium gas (ouch) in it, it will stop.

The air filter is fairly new also.

The only thing I have been modding around with is my sound system, but it isnt even functional right now and the problem still persists.

the only fuel filter it has is on the bottom of the fuel pump..

it could be your idle air control valve...or the throttle body might need cleaning out...

I guess I need to take it to a mechanic... I don't know too much about cars. I understand the basic concept of most of it, but I am not too experienced.

Need a little more detail it sounds like it's out of time in that model dodges there was a good deal of computer problems which would explain the timing problem but you can't really tell with out further checking bring it to a mechanic.

Have your battery and alternator checked. At low rpms your alternator may not be putting enough power out to run the truck, and a weak battery will just aggravate the problem.
