Exclamation Any suggestions on what's going on here?

I have a '93 cutlass supreme, which I've had for a little over a year. I've never had any major problems with it until now. When I went to first start it this morning to leave for work, it was revving real high to 3k rpm. It seemed like something was making gas go to the engine to make it go, but from what I could tell, the gas pedal wasn't stuck towards the floor at all. When I shifted, it went down a little bit but was still above 2k rpm. If I just let it go, it would accelerate a little bit on its own...not fast but it would gradually speed up so I'd constantly have to have my foot on the brake pedal.

The brakes were acting weird too, though. They worked, but it was really hard to push the pedal, like when your power steering goes out and and it's really hard to turn the wheel. Yesterday it was just fine, no problems or sign of anything. I've never heard of anything like this. Any suggestions?

It sounds like you have a big vacuum leak.

If false air is leaking into the intake the engine responds just like an open throttle admits more air when you open it.

The brake booster needs vacuum to assist in the brake application. If you have a vacuum leak the booster isn't getting the vacuum it needs to function properly and the brake pedal feels hard and not responsive.

Look around under the hood for a hose that's come off or a big crack in it. If you can't find the leak, start the engine and listen for hissing under the hood.

sounds like the vacuum line to the booster came off or its leaking.

Thanks for the input guys. I did take a look under the hood and noticed that the hose connected to the cruise controller was cracked pretty bad but is that a hose that would be causing any part of this issue? I can't see all of the brake hose without lifting up the car and looking underneath, so I wasn't able to see if it was off or cracked(seems like that's the case though). And with the extra gas being sucked into the engine, it makes it loud and probably drowns out any hiss coming from a leak so I wasn't able to hear anything like that. Starting to look like I'll just have to take it in.
