Default Car advice for student graduating from college?

Hello guys! This my first post as a new member here, woohoo.

So I've never owned a car before and now I'm finishing my graduate school. I have been on campus all the time (almost) so I never needed a car. The only usage pattern I could think about with cars are just going to movies and meet with people and I don't think I'm going to drive for very long range. I don't care much about speed but more of being in control of the car. I'm deciding from buying a new one or a used one at around $20k budget. I felt my friend all give me some one-sided views of the car market so I'm kind of lost. Any suggestion will be really appreciated.

I'd get the newest lowest mileage Toyota Corolla you can afford.

Thanks! I kinda observe the pattern of the need of elaboration in different places.. Wondering what are the killer factors in Toyota Corolla given its price range?

I second this those suckers never die. A Honda Civic would also be a good choice.
