Default NJ auto auction for $3,000 truck?

Hi,

I did a few hours research and still know basically nothing about auctions.

The last three cars I got were from a guy I know who gets them at auctions and sells them on the side. I got bargains all three times = approx $2,000 for 8-year old coupes with around 100,000 miles that had no problems and probably would have made it to 200,000 miles...

I'm looking for a particular small truck at $3,000 max = 4 cyl, auto, extended cab, under 100K miles and not over 10 years old.

I found decent deals on craigslist but would like to get an even better deal at an auction.

I know auctions probably charges fees and/or require a membership/license, but aparently it's still justifiable for a low-priced car hence the three $2,000 bargais I've gotten plus the profit the guy made out of that $2,000.

Does anyone know where in NJ/NYC area/Eastern PA area I should look into for a good deal? Do I need a dealers licence and/or would need it towed off the lot and thus wouldn't be worth it to just buy just one car? Should I seek out an established auction reseller and just give them a couple hundred dollars to get me a truck? Should I just get something off craigslist?

Thanks for any help.

You need to be VERY careful with auctions. If I remember right some auctions don't start the car, and it may have some concealed accident damage (and/or **** repairs).

First off with auctions, throw out your "well it should run for this many miles."

You have NO history on the vehicle, you do not know if it runs, or runs well.

If you are not a mechanic or unquestionably capable of doing the work that will most likely need to be done yourself, you WILL lose money on an auction.

Just go to craigslist.

Ehh lol I've done my fair share of craigslisting, both buying and selling. If you're not capable of working on cars yourself I'd stick with someone you can go back to if problems arise that can be held responsible.

The cars you buy are a little different circumstance than the cars most other people buy lol.

I know that I buy junk though lol. The main reason I say this is because my brother traded his v10 dodge 2500 for a very nice looking newer intrepid advertised as being in mint condition a while back. Little did he know the guy put like 90 weight in the motor so you couldn't hear the knocking until about a week later. You can hold a dealer responsible for something like that. Good luck even finding the craigslister.

You would be ridiculous to think that's the rule rather than the exception.

Be kinda impossible to not notice 90W oil if he bothered to pull the dipstick out anyway, but that's not the point.

Many people including myself have bought many, many cars without problem on craigslist. In fact, I wouldn't buy a car from most dealerships.

Saying you can hold dealerships responsible for things like that? You may have a leg to stand on, but good luck. They can deny you all they want till you take it to court and pay what you would've got back in legal fees. Forget it.

You're probably right lol. I just don't trust people. I haven't bought from a dealer, buy here pay here, or anything like that, so you know better than me. But I would just assume I could trust a dealer more because they have a name to uphold. If they go around screwing people over, they will lose business, where as an individual has nothing to lose. I guess that's probably just because of my lack of faith in humanity that makes me think that way.
