Smile 2002 Mazda Protege5 (Hatchback) vs. 2001 Toyota Echo (Sedan)

I am stumped between these two. Both cars are automatic.

The Mazda (198,606 km) is $1600 and the Toyota (256,627 km) is $2000.

I'm getting conflicting opinions by two people. Person A says the Mazda is prone to more repairs relating to the electrical elements such as sensors, etc. Person B says that the Toyota might be a bit shaky when driving in the highway next to large trucks, especially in winter.

Could someone provide me with an insight please with your experience or what you have heard about? I am looking to get my first ever car and my family have never owned one before. So, this is really challenging for me. I'm just trying to get as many opinions as possible.

I would recommend both cars.

The only deciding factor would be condition.

Any car should be inspected before you buy.

I'd go with the Mazda given the same condition. Both are going to be pretty shaky, they're both subcompact tin cans.
