Exclamation Nobody can figure out what's wrong with my car!

Ok,
So I have a 99 Corolla. Ever since I bought it, it smells like gas. It is particularly strong right by the tank. But I can also smell it inside the car as well. It seems to be barley noticeable in the morning, or after I have not driven it for hours. Then after I drive it is when I notice it the most. The mechanic I bought it from said there was a small leak near the top and he epoxied it.
Well, I keep smelling the gas. I waited the 24 hours, and went and got gas. A couple days later the check engine light came on, with code P0440. I took it back to the mechanic and he said it was just the gas cap had not been screwed on properly. I said I didnt think this was it, but he insisted and reset the code.
THEN I kept smelling like these random really strong whiffs of exhaust fumes. It is completely random. The other day it happened and the check engine light came on again (about a week after the first one) The car was shaking and felt like it was going to die whenever I slowed down. I think she is drinking a lot more gas too when this happens...but I cannot be positive of this yet...I am still calculating it. I took it to the mechanic again...he said it was the gas cap. He ran the code....said it was the same code (gas cap) and reset it. I didnt get to see the code but I looked over his shoulder and saw emissions. He took the car for a ride and didnt notice anything unusual. BUT by the time I got there the symptoms had disappeared!
So this is my problem! It comes and goes, and I don;t know when it is going to happen! I feel like the mechanic is blowing me off, thinking I am over exaggerating or something. I don't know what to think about the whole situation because I am still smelling gas pretty strong. I want to believe he is a nice man and wouldn't lie to me and stuff. BUT the car is under a 30day warranty (which is up now) so he could just be trying to brush everything under the rug to get through the 30 days...you know?
Does anyone have any idea as to what could be going on with this car? I am like afraid to drive the ****ing thing. I took it to another mechanic before and he looked for leaks in the lines (and basically anywhere visible that you dont have to take to much time taking things apart to check) and he said she was fine.
Please help! Sorry this is so long!

Hi

First off their is NO "gas cap" code! He may see a code for a small leak, or a large leak. The gas cap can cause one of those codes but their are many other places the system can leak. It could be an old hose that is cracked, a rusted out vent pipe or a tank vent valve. I've seen the vent tube in the filler neck rust through in some cars.

You are smelling gas fumes after it is driven because the fuel gets hot from circulating to the engine and back, it picks up heat from the engine and this causes the pressure in the fuel tank to increase and forces gas fumes out wherever it can escape.

The proper method to locate a fuel tank vent leak is with a smoke machine. It can easily reveal even a small leak. Make sure the NEXT mechanic you take ti to will use a smoke machine to locate the leak.

The gas cap will not cause your car to run poorly. You likely have some other issues with it.

Thank you for your response! I guess its time for me to confront him. What do you think would cause the random strong smell of exhaust and the almost stalling? Do you think this is related to the gas smell?

The random strong smell of exhaust is likely happening when the engine is not running right. I doubt it's related to the gas smell, another issue.
