Default suv vs awd

What makes an suv more offroadable than a normal car with awd and and good ground clearence? Why is the body it self so tall? I am not talking about the space between the cars underside and the ground ( ground clearence) i am talking about the actual height of the body.

The body is tall to make lots of room for stuff.

The SUV has more wheel travel than most cars.

Many SUVs have a tougher suspension than most cars.

Does the SUV having more wheel travel due to the "thickness" of the body?

A proper 4X4 is much more than just a drivetrain and a higher riding height. It's about suitable tyres, steering mechanisms (providing the desired ratio and some "slack" in the straight ahead position), softer suspension and chassis, a transfer box (with "high-low" range) - the lot.

Both offer some compromise on the road and are otherwise inferior to a car, whether it has all-wheel drive or not. The car would prove inferior off of the road, although most cars will endure a smooth dirt road.
Why woudlld ride height appeal (how high off the ground you sit, I understand) anybody?

Wheel travel is usually increased over a car because the vehicle is 1/2 way between a car and a 4wd off-road. A compromise.

Originally the SUV was a "civilized" off-road vehicle, nicer than the dedicated off-road, but not as tough as the off-road 4 wheel drive. A true off-road vehicle has a low range for climbing steep grades. Many SUVs now a days do not. Very few AWD have low range.

My GMC Envoy does have a low range, but it sits so low I would not take it off road. It's really just a city truck. I would rather have had AWD, more useful for me.

SUV's extra height provides the driver a clearer of vision of the road. Since most SUV's have 4weel drive they can handle different kind of road conditions. They also can haul heavy stuff without difficulty.
