Default Next collectable car

I want to fix up a car, but I have been searching the market for the next car that will become collectible, but are still selling at a reasonably low price. Any ideas of what the next collector car will be?

E39 540i can't really get any cheaper but is 90% of an M5 for a fraction of the price.

any particular year? What about Camaros? I've seen the IROC's have become a collectable, also grand nationals and cars like that. Any other recommendations? I'm not necessarily comfortable working on beamers yet

Excellent question! From the jap world, I'd see an unmolested Kouki 240sx becoming very desirable down the road. They only made that body style for 2 years ('97 and '98) and the 240 is an iconic car of the tuner crowd.

E46 M3 is an easy choice.

From VW -- maybe a R32?

RX7s and Supras are already collectible.

On an older Top Gear, Hammond did a piece on this question. He chose the VW Corrado and the 190E Benz.

I've really been interested in restoring a Datsun 240z or 280z. Thoughts on that?

Those are really cool but are already old and aren't worth much. Seen some absolutely perfect ones going for 10-15k tops. If they were going to get collectible and valuable I'd expect they would have already.

I mean if I could get one for like 2k, it would be in terrible condition, and the resto would probably cost 5k. I'd barely make my money back, not worth it. I might just do it for myself, I love those cars

Heh, I think you'd be lucky to make your money back on a restoration. Would probably cost way more than 5k.

Yeah, depends on the condition, plus I really don't do body work, not my thing. I'll really only work on a car if it has minimal rust, it's my mortal enemy. and I hate bondo

I mean I could probably get one in decent condition for 4-5K with some engine work to be done
