Question Service engine soon light on 2002 Saturn SL2

I have a 2002 Saturn SL2. A warning light came on in my dash that said "Service engine soon". I ignored it, due to the fact that I had no money to fix anything, and hoped it would go away or was otherwise just reminding me of some routine maintenance that can be left alone. The light stayed on for a while, went off for a shorter while, then came back on for an even shorter while. Then about a week ago, I went to start my car and it would turn over, but as soon as I left go of the key, it would shut off and wouldn't stay on. I knew of this guy at work who knew somewhat about cars and asked him to take a look at it and see if he could determine what was wrong. He came over with this sensor type device that he plugged into a port under my dash and had an app on his phone that read it. He looked at it for about ten minutes but couldn't figure out what was wrong. He ended up just unhooking the battery and connecting it back to reset the ECU. My car then stayed running and seemed fine and the light went off. Now it has been about a week and the "Service engine soon" light is back on. What could be the problem?

You will have to have a scanner connected to the car again and get codes that help to determine the problem. Nothing we can do to help with diagnosing your problem without more info.

Have your coworker pull the codes using his phone app while the light is on. With the code numbers we'll have some idea of possible causes. Warning though, that none of the myriad of potential causes will have a simple/free fix.
