Default About Shelby Mustangs

For the "Automotive History" Contest

It all started in 1964 with the release of Ford's Mustang, a car that is still appreciated today. The car immediately became very famous among young car buyers; it was relatively inexpensive and it was the sport car they had wanted since they were young.

However, Ford's execs decided that the line needed a significant boost beyond their current standing in the car manufacturing world. The answer? Caroll Shelby.

Shelby, most noted for his AC Shelby Cobra, was brought on board to redesign the Mustang. What most people do not know is that it was not initially intended to be sold to consumers- It was designed to win the Sports Car Club of America's national B-production championship.

It was a hit. It was sold to consumers as well as racers, and the car was amazing: fast, sleek and dead sexy. Shelby's modified version came with his own custom badges and their own name, the GT-350.

Arguably, the Shelby series started the whole "muscle car" era of America: Smaller cars with massive size engines that blew away the larger competition.

However, the Shelby series eventually came to an end. Why? Large number of accidents, subsequent high insurance rates, and the ushering in of lesser cars spelled the end of the Shelby series in 1970.

Not to worry! There is an upcoming 2007 Shelby Cobra that Ford has created with the help of the powers on high, like SVT and Caroll Shelby. It is the most powerful car Ford has ever turned out of a factory at stock: It turns over 450 HP in stock form. Its whole chassis was designed from scratch to facilitate a high-performance ride with superior handling.

Nice Write-up. Nothing I didn't already know though. That 350 has the same wheels I have on my car!

I figured it would help some people out.

@ Born, I am guessing it was a racing car, so if it crashed the headlights wouldn't shatter, spraying everyone with glass shards

Hey all is fair in love and war. If Krunk can dish out a better history of Shelby then guess what. He wins . Corey I love you but it could have went further into detail. You can always revise. Carol shelby made more than cobras. I never owned a cobra. But I owned two cars made by shelby. They were shelby CSXs. one was a parts car one was my daily driver. I sold them to my brothers friend for 8,000.
