Red face choose a right car to buy

Hi
I have 3000 pound to spend on car,i have seen some car but really donít know which could be the car which I can keep it for couple of year without needing of keep going to garage
I know Japanese car are tough and looking to buy car which be really reliable
List of the car that I think it would be good choice for me as student
Fiat punto(the one which i am currently thinking about it as it is cheap ,has good fuel economy )
Ford focus
Vauxhall astra ,corsa
Most of my friend suggesting that ford and Vauxhall are not reliable but what about fiat punto
please help me as I want to buy car within this month and appreciate any helps
So I need to buy car with max price of 3k
and most important thing is to be reliable so if wouldnít need to go to garage every month, in other word I mean that i can trust it if i am travelling with family not just keep thinking it might breakdown any time
thanks

I can recommend you the ford focus
we have a 2001 focus and it never had any problems
we also have a 2004 fiesta, same thing, never had a problem thus we tend to trust ford and will probably consider ford models when we'll need another car

if you decide to get a punto just make sure it's not an older model, sure don't get the first model: current and previous models (grande punto and its preceding restiling) are both reliable and economic.
what about a VW Polo or a Golf IV (that's a great car... I've had it and loved it)?
or a Toyota Yaris?

I can't really tell based on personal experience
I own a 2001 focus and it never needed anything done
I know several guys who drive yaris (both current and previous model) and you know, toyota is reliable, yaris isn't an exception
the punto (the new one, grande punto or the previous one) is reliable as well, assuming you're not buying the very first model (that I think was sold until around 2000 probably but I might be wrong)
I mean this one

as far as fuel consumption the yaris has a better mileage for sure if compared to the focus
