Default 1996 BMW 318is

So since I got my license on the last Friday of August I've been driving my 1991 300E, and I HATE it its automatic is the roughest by far of any of the cars in my family (it is the oldest lol) and it is heavy, soft and underpowered. 2 weeks after I got my license the chip in the transmission that tells it when to shift somehow died (not my fault since it happened while the car was off lol) so it was stuck in first, we just got it fixed and I got it back yesterday but now I my cousin's 1996 318is failed its smog test again so his sister is giving him her C230k (its like a 2004 or something but she doesn't need it any more) and since he's getting that my dad is buying his 318is and having it's catalytic converter and exhaust system fixed so it'll pass smog and then he's giving it to me

The car is like the polar opposite of my car, a Bizarro-300E of sorts. It's got a 5 speed manual, a 1.9L 4 cylinder (non turbo believe it or not but it's pretty quick) and has legendary BMW handling through and through, it's in sexy black and is a 2 door 2+2.

EDIT: I'm looking to upgrade my car's sound system, what do you guys think of this:

Alpine CDA-9857 HD Radio CD player with iPod control cable

I may or may not also replace the factory kick panel speakers with the Polk db5250s it includes the 5-1/4" mid/bass woofers, 1in liquid cooled (im serious) tweeters and 2 way crossover.

If I get those speakers, will they sound alright through the 18Wx4 channel head unit amplifier or should I also get an external amplifier for it?

Great to hear! I love the older 3-series BMWs (e30 and e36). I would get one if they weren't so expensive. (above 3000 is expesive for me) Hope you enjoy it.

Hi there, you can't go wrong with an E36. The M44 DOHC engine in the 318is is a real sweetheart. I have a rare 1998 318is saloon. I have posted a few pics in the gallery. Post some of yours when you can. I hope you enjoy owning it.
Steve.

I'm not sure if I'll take pics of my car (at least not until it's done with the 'work' I'm having done on it, that is if the parents go for it) I won't be actually getting it for another 2 weeks now and my dad says first it has to be made to pass smog (could range anywhere from changing an oxygen sensor to getting a whole new exhaust system) then it has to be certified by the DMV and then finally my dad will be allowed to buy it from my cousin and it will be mine.

I hope to do some serious work under the hood including a new ECU, intake and exhaust and possibly a turbo, and a whole new sound system from Pioneer most likely.

Good luck Remonster, I hope everything works out and the car becomes yours. Tell your Dad to be a good egg and do the business. My daughter is 19 and I have just bought a 1991 BMW E30 316i Lux as a project which I will be restoring and passing on to her to enter in shows.
A new ECU or a Remap on your existing ECU and a performance exhaust system are a good idea but I wouldn't bother with a turbo. You would have to spend lots of money to get nothing more than a lot of unreliability. They are never that succesful with BMW's. A performance cold air filter or even a panel filter will make an improvement to the throttle response but much more in the way of performance mods will probably spoil the driveability of the car.
Another thing to consider is the suspension set up. The cars handle well in std form but there are plenty of suspension improvements that can be made that will have the car handling like a dream.
Keep us informed how you get on.
Good luck. Steve.

Yeah, my cousin (the one with the C230K) used to have a 1991 E30 318i also and its also an awesome car, I'd been wanting a manual so I originally asked for that one but then my other cousin offered to sell the '96 E36 and I liked that car even more.

Anyways, today I got to drive it for the first time and having size 15US shoes really doesn't help with driving a stick but I absolutely love the car, I never exceeded 3000RPM and stuck to the first 3 gears around my neighborhood but already I can tell this car is a joy to drive compared to my lethargic 300E I should get it within 2 weeks and probably won't spend any money on it except to replace the radio headunit for an iPod compatible one (also its screen is so dark you can't read anything any more lol).

Update, I'm about to go to my cousin's house to pick up my 318is today I'm so happy. On a side note I almost lost the car because on the way to school today the police set up some stupid speed trap (4 motorcycles lined up and a squad car waiting on the other side of the road) and were speed gunning everybody, the road has a 55MPH speed limit and I was doing 76 which is not that big of a deal but the cop who pulled me over claimed it was a school zone (give me a break, its a 4 lane road thats practically a freeway) so he said technically the speed limit at the time was 25!!! long story short they called my dad and he was pretty angry at me but luckily my parents decided to give me a second chance so I'm still getting the Bimmer hooray.

Also: Cops, get a life and stop sitting around waiting to hand out tickets you campers! rofl.

I consider going 76 in a 55 zone to be a pretty big deal. 21 mph over the speed limit is a little excessive especially on a busy road in the middle of the day. If your 300E is as slow as you say it is and you get a ticket like that you had better keep the BMW under control if hope to keep your car and you license.
