Default Buying a used car for under 6K

I am not exactly sure that this is where I should be posting since it is my first post, but I am looking to buy a used car. I have never bought a car before and I am a bit overwhelmed. I have about 6K to spend on the car. I really have no idea what type of car I could afford with this kind of money, but I would like a nicer car. It doesn't need to be the fastest or most luxurious, but just a type of car that doesn't look from the getgo like it is going to fall appart. I am mostly looking for advice as to what kind of car I should be looking for. I have been searching craigslist, but I also want to look on ebay. I need a type of to enter into the ebay search bar so that I am not looking through a bunch of junk. Let me know what people think are the types of cars that one could get for 6K. Thanks.

I have had awesome luck with craigslist, and for that amount of money you should be able to find something very nice.

I think more information would be good, I mean you can get just about anything from 1995 to 2000 or so with 6 grand (within reason). Are you looking for a sports car, 4 door car, is fuel economy an issue, do you want a truck, 4 wheel drive, AWD, what is more important to you, power, comfort, reliability?

Well I am looking for a 4 door car or a sports car. As long as it doesn't get terrible fuel economy, I am not going to be driving it that much that I need anything like a hybrid. I have no need for a truck, but 4 wheel drive or AWD would be a plus but not necessarily needed. At this point, power is the least important for me. Comfort and reliability are both about the same but I think if I had to choose, reliability would come out ahead. It just needs to be a car that I don't have to worry I am going to be constantly throwing money at it to fix it up or one that will fall apart right after I buy it.

A low mileage Subaru

AWD & decent gas mileage.

Are there any specific Subaru's that are pretty nice and have a good track record in particular?

3 popular models;
The Legacy is nice
The WRX version is really fast.
And if you want to go all out, a WRX STI

They all have AWD and a good reputation.

My son drives a WRX.

The basic Legacy is nice with all the bells and whistles and you can probably find one in your price range.

I was thinking the same thing as I was reading his post, lol.

A nice low mileage impreza would be pretty nice. Light weight, decent fuel economy, and tons of fun. Along with being cheap they're not too difficult to maintain either.

The WRX is a great idea, but insurance will be a pain if you're younger than 25. For me it comes out to around $500 a month for an 02. I can insure my jeep for $50 a month with full comprehensive... A regular impreza would be significantly less though.

Hmm, it's off topic, but i have to tell it: it's amazing how cheap cars are in the USA. In Europe comparable Subaru from 2000 costs about 10,000 dollars and more (ofcourse i'm talking about cars in good condition).

Ok, you have 6k dollars... Maybe VW Golf GTI (in the USA calls Rabbit?)... I think it's a really good car.

Ya I have heard from a lot of people that Subaru is a good type of car to get. I haven't heard about VW's at all. Do they tend to have a longer lifespan?

As for the Subaru suggestions, I know the WRX STi is way out of the price range. A friend of mine just bought one for around 26k. I haven't looked into the legend or the impreza so that is something that I would consider. Can both of the cars go for under 6k though?

Check Craig's List in your area.

My personal preference would be a Subaru over a VW
