Default saving for a first car - what should i get?

i'm driving around in my parents vn commodore these days, but i'm moving out n going 2 the army for a year n then uni after that, n i think they want the commodore lol.. i'm looking for a decent pretty fast (doesn't have to be ridiculously fast tho) stylish car that comes with a decent sound system. i've been looking at hatches on the internet, stuff like mazda 3 mps, ford falcon xr5, dodge caliber srt 4 (don't think u can get them here in australia but i like the look of the sound system thing)... i like the idea of lots of space in the back that i could put bodyboards, fishing rods, **** like that.. so yeah i like that sorta thing but they are like nearly 40,000 new. i don't think i really want to pay much more than $20,000 AU. thing is with these cars though is they look sorta gay... and i'm not so keen for front wheel drive, i like the idea of 4wd n stuff so i could drive on the beach n go fishing n stuff without getting bogged.

so yeah i was wondering if u thought something like the mazda 3 mps models that are coming out now might be worth like 20,000 used in say 4-5 years time? is there any cars sorta like what i want that are less 'girly' that maybe have 4wd? thanks for your time.

I'm not in the know how of cars in australia. But get a Skyline Turbo or GTR. You should be able to pick up an R32 GTR for less than 20K AUS.

or a Holden Monaro.

I haven't Dynoed it yet, but I'll estimate around 280-300RWHP.

A Monaro would work

Another vote for Monaro. Try get a pre facelift model, they're fairly cheap to buy and maintain (excluding fuel costs of course ). They're fairly indestructible too so let high kilometers put you off, those things can go forever but service history is a must.

If you're worried about fuel costs a good bet is something like the Ford Focus you talked about before, as you'd be hard pressed to better 15l per 100km with the Monaro and if you want to drive it how it's meant to be driven it'll be closer to 20... And take things into account such as insurance etc.. as it'd probably be more expensive to insure a big v8 than a small turbo I would think.

I think an STi would be perfect for you. The hatches can hold tons of stuff, it's got an amazing AWD system, and it has a pretty good amount of power.

Plus it's got great build quality and is very easily moddable if you decide you want more power later.

I was actually calculating what my payments would be on an 04 STi right before I checked carforum. (The insurance still kills me at my age...)

How about just the plain WRX? it seem a lot cheaper, how much better is the STi? WRX claimed 0-60mph in 5.5 sec. not sure how awd compares to 4wd but does AWD allow me to drive on the beach? if it does i think this is what i will get. thanks. is the sound system on it decent? i'm not real good at fiddling with **** like that. thanks.

Cruising on the beach in an STi would be no problem. People have been known to take them off roading from time to time too.

The WRX is the second tier of the impreza line, where the STi is the highest, most well equipped model. Both are great cars with tons of potential, I just recommended the STi as the newer ones are hatchbacks. You could also get a WRX wagon and still have a very potent, very capable AWD vehicle.

Oh, and you can't forget that with the subie you get the boxer's amazing sound!
