Default buying a car from out of state?

I'm looking at picking up a truck from St. Louis, and I'm wondering how to get it home (its a private party, and I'll be driving it home, since the focus will be out of my life (thank ****ing god!), do I have to get 7 day tags (or w/e their called in MO or what? Plus I was looking at the IL DMV's website, and what kind of plates does it get? Its over 8000 pounds. (8400 there about).

In my state it doesn't matter where the car is coming from, all that matters what state you live in. Around here you have to go to your local DMV and get 10-day temp tags. I forgot what exactly you need, like bill of sale, VIN. Once you get the car home then you can register it normally. I'd call my local DMV if I were you.

Eh, if you get pulled over without plates, just tell the cops that you had a Ford...I'm sure they'll understand.

Also, make sure you let your insurance company know you are going to be driving the vehicle, that way you can be sure you are covered.

I've bought many cars, I just go with no plates at all, and I don't even put the NO TRANSIT hand written sign in the window after being pulled over and told it is illegal to have it *shrugs*

As long as you have the bill of sale and proof of insurance of some sort you should be fine. My insurance company just told me to carry along the insurance card from one of my other cars to prove I do have valid insurance.

could I stick my old plates on it and keep the bill of sale (with insurance). considering I've had to pay for the same set of plates twice at 175 a pop, I'm not getting rid of them when I sell them!

In my state that wouldn't work. When the cops run a trace on a plate, the car they see has to match the car that comes up in their database. Really, the laws for where you are (Illinois) are the ones that apply.
Hvae you looked here? There's a toll-free number you can call.
