Default normal for a transmission?

It was nice out today so I had my windows down in my focus today. I was slowing down coming up to an intersection, and I could hear my car downshift over the sound of the engine, do all cars do this? (I know I can hear it when my car idles if I listen close enough).

No, if you can't hear parts falling off, it's definitely not normal for a Ford. lol

But seriously...what exactly did it sound like? Was it just a smooth downshift/revving noise, or could you hear gears grinding or "clinking"?

I know grinding gears, (sometimes I shift faster than my feet can work) as soon as my parents go to bed I'll run out into the garage and run through the gears, I've never had a stick before my focus, so I don't know a whole alot about "normal" sounds in a trans.

it was the sound more than the video (the sound of the trans shifting). should you really be able to hear it over my engine?

I didn't hear anything that sounded unusual. Yes you can normally hear the gears move when putting it into gear and your engine was just idlingnot reving. Plus a Focus is a economy built car it's not like they were going to invest alot of time in R&D to quite nioses like that.
