Default 1995 Eagle Talon/Mitsubishi Eclipse failed e-test

I'm looking to buy a car still, came across a 1995 Eagle Talon which is basically the same as an Eclipse, the person said it runs fine, but failed the e-test because there was smoke in the exhaust so they wouldn't test it?

If I just cleaned it up, would it pass?

If you cleaned up the smoke would it pass?

There's more to the test than your car not smoking.

If you cleaned it up they would test it. It could then fail on something else.

You could try some engine oil additive to try to reduce the smoke. It might help some with other emissions. You will have to deal with the smoking first, then with whatever the test finds.

Good luck

Yeah, I'm aware there could be more as they wouldn't test it due to the fact, I was just curious as to if there was some known issue with these models that did that or if it would just be the basics.

the known issues are head problems normally the fix is a major repair.

Hm, I'm asking because I'm looking to buy one. It was e-tested last year and now it's smoking and they won't test it.

They only want $1000 CAD so if it's just an oil change that's a pretty easy fix?

its a lot more than an oil change to fix the smoking, a head gasket is usually always over 1K if you don't do it yourself (or 50 or 60 to do it yourself, provided you have the right tools). the stop smoke stuff might help you get into the e-test, but if you fail it, it will cost EVEN more to repair above the head gasket.

to do a head gasket properly were looking at.
Gasket set 60-120
stretch head bolts 40-60
oil and filter 10-40
coolant 20-40
t-stat with gasket 10-25
timing belt 28-70
timing componet kit 49.99-129.99
spark plugs 8-10
wires 10-50
machine work 150-350

and this is everything you would need to do the job properly yourself. labor to have a shop do it add 650-1000.

but also it could have other problems head problems are common on these cars but it could be the rings.

8-10 for plugs? if we're talking spark plugs its 13 a plug for my focus. I paid 15 a pop for the cruiser's iridium plugs.

HOLY CRAP I wish it was that cheap here. Granted I shouldn't need plugs for another 24K miles or so?
