Default 10 Cars That Sank Detroit

I thought there was a lot of truth to this, especially the Ford Explorer.

Quote:
There will be plenty of business-school case studies analyzing all the automakers' wrong turns. But, as they say in the industry, it all comes down to product. So here are 10 cars that help explain the demise of Detroit: GM and Chrysler need a multibillion-dollar government bailout to survive, and both could be in bankruptcy by summer if they don't meet tough government demands. Ford hasn't asked for a bailout—yet—but it's bleeding cash and racing the clock to turn itself around.

  2. Chevrolet Cavalier
  3. Chevrolet Astro
  4. Ford Taurus.
  5. Ford Explorer
  6. Jaguar X-Type
  7. Hummer H2
  8. Toyota Prius]
  9. Chrysler Sebring
  10. Jeep Compass

I read that yesterday. There are several that have absolutely no business being on there. The Ford Taurus is one, Ford Explorer is another. They can make whatever excuses they want about how they 'ended up' but the plain fact of the matter is they were monster successes for the majority of their run and they are still selling now, with the totally new Taurus looking to be another major success for Ford. The Cavalier is moderately less successful but was still very good for Chevy for many years.

Sebring could go either way, the current model (with sister car Dodge Avenger) is not so good at all, but they were very nice in the 90's with the first implementation of the cab forward design.

Chevy Astro, I'd agree, although for some odd reason there are still hundreds on the road around here, all oddly enough seem to be driven by hispanics, they just love them.

The Hummer H2 I always thought was far too excessive, and now, well, it sure seems to be a total representation of living beyond one's means in the current market, especially when gas prices went way up.

Jeep Compass, ABSOLUTELY agree, I've said this before, Jeep needs to get back to their roots, drop everything except three models: wrangler, Liberty, and grand cherokee. The rest of them, LOSE THEM, they have basically bastardized the line with all the different types. The 4 door wrangler is one ugly beast too, slash and burn, and leave just those three models and Jeep will do just fine.

Nailed it on the head I was ready to argue the same facts except i like the 4dr wrangler it's just nice to see a actual change in the jeep platform rather then a revamp.

I agree, but the fact is that jeep is one of chrysler's best selling names, and they want to milk it for all it's worth. The compass is just an attempt at making a fuel efficient vehicle with the jeep name. Heck they even have them in a manual FWD version with 30+ highway mpg.

I somewhat agree on the 4 door wrangler. It is indeed very ugly, but I see plenty of them around town and they mostly all belong to families with kids. Plus you can actually store things in the back, which is always a welcome addition with a wrangler.
I remember trying to stuff things into a friend's old YJ....it required lots of creativity and the occasional use of duct tape.

Actually the number of models of jeeps has hurt the line, not helped them, it has diluted the brand and taken it away from its core supporters. If you look at the Compass, its sales are terrible. The three I listed actually do pretty well. Also, there isn't a single vehicle in the entire Chrysler LLC lineup, that includes Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler, that gets 30 mpg, none of them do. Oh they try and say the Compass/Caliber does, but it does not, and that is what really hurt them last summer when gas prices went nuts.

Thank you Daimler for that bit of genius. F' Mercedes, especially if Chrysler ends up dying.

No but the article is suggesting that Toyota ate their lunch by developing and marketing the Prius, so the Prius can be counted as on of the cars that sank Detroit.
