Default 1987 supra turbo

I installed a used 1989 engine last month, the car ran fine for a while 2 days hesitates and sputters at high boost and then it got worse now it runs fine for couple minutes shutt off the engine and i get another couple minutes of running okay and then it hesitates it seems like it does this gradually. So i took the spark plugs out they had black soot and carboned up replaced them with NJK platinums gap at .031 it ran fine for a few hours then same problem again i have replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, cone shaped air filter, fuel pressure regulator" off my old engine" which was working befor, checked some of the vacume lines i dont think there is any leakes.
So i don't know what else that is causing the problem! Any ideas? I would appreciate any responses. Thank you.

I suspect a turbo problem may be a leak or did they adjust the valves properly before installing the motor

Re gap the plugs to .28 And have you done a boost leak check? Compression check? 7mGTE's are NOTORIOUS for blown head gaskets! If your smart you will grab a set of ARP head studs and install them asap if you havent already done that. I wish i knew more about the 7m, but i have a 1jz, so my honest suggestion to you would be hit up supramania.com, and they will help more than we can.

Is it possible to put the lexus Air mass flow on my turbo supra with out doing any other upgrades. I took the car in to the Toyota dealer and they said that my OEM air mass flow sensor is bad and i need to replace it for $1150. I have a lexus AMF for one of my future upgrades , So is it alright to switch them around or not ? any one knows out there. Thanks

I wouldn't really think so...I'm pretty sure the electronics in those parts aren't interchangeable.

You would have to use a siliscope to map the wave forms on the Lexus sensor and a good working Supra sensor to tell if it will read right for the ECU if it doesn't this could make the car run extremly poor. Don't forget other place sell the MAF sensor for cheaper it's still price but it takes five minutes to install and will save hundreds over the dealer plus you can do it your self just needs a flat head.

I should have recognized the MAF problem when you said shut it off and it works fine for a few minutes normally the easiest way to test a MAF is to disconnect it then hard reset the ecu and test drive with it disconnected if the problem goes away that's your source. Your symptoms describe a MAF down to the plugs and the shut off temp fix. I appoligize I'm just not to farmiliar with turbo and I shied away to quick.

SORRY! I slipped. I'll pay more attention next time.

Im not sure about the lexus afm, but i know its a very popular mad with the 7MGTE. Like i mentioned, your answers would be answered much quicker on Supramania, than on here. They are a supra only community, that know all of your questions. Do some searching on there.

disconect the battery terminals and touch positive to negative hold them together for 20 seconds this wil clear any stored values and the ECM will go back to factory defaults. Leave the MAF disconnected and test drive do you have the same problem? If not reconnect the MAF with the new sensor installed and test drive is the problem still gone then the sensor is the problem replace and recheck. Also wheck the connector at the sensor the pigtail tends to loose connectivety some times the pins get loose.

If the terminals won'e reach use aq wrench to bridge the gaps just remember both terminals need to be disconnected from the battery
