Default ARGH the water pump

I had to give up my truck these past few weeks as hubby has been using it to haul building materials. Instead I've been driving his MB E300 diesel - a car I stupidly advised him to get, thinking it would resemble the older W124s I knew and loved in Germany. Ever since he's had it I've heard nothing but bad language describing what he thinks of the engineers who designed it.

I was driving to work in my morning fog and started having trouble - I'd be rolling along at a good clip and lose power, the engine would rev but I wasn't getting any speed. It was like the transmission wasn't working, or at least that was the snap judgment I made. Like I said, I wasn't really paying attention and was in my morning fog. If I'd had my requisite does of coffee I would have noticed the temperature was too high. <looks for smack head smiley> I got it about halfway to work and gave up at a hardware store parking lot. A couple of good samaritans came out and wanted to help, suggesting I check the transmission fluid level. Can't do that on this car, as it has a sealed system.

My husband came by with the truck and I got to drive my truck home while he limped home with the Benz. It turned out to be the water pump (duh) which I should have known. After all I had had that problem twice with my VW Golf years ago (the way VWOA handled it is the reason I won't buy a VW in the US anymore by the way).

Long story short, hubby got a water pump and put it in yesterday so I'm back to driving the Benz while he gets to drive the "chick truck."

Thank God you didn't do what I did when I was like 18 in my 1983 Dodge Colt...

There was a bunch of steam coming up and fogging the windshield then some loud scraping noise, then the hot water light went on and I thought "Dang, I better check that when I get home" which was still about 20 miles away...

Yes, never EVER keep driving when that light comes on haha. The bearings failed in the water pump and I kept driving and blew up the motor.

This thing doesn't have idiot lights. And yes I felt like an idiot for not looking at the temp gauge. I was so wrapped up in realizing that I had just become the 'jerk-in-front-doing-20-in-a-35mph-zone' that I jumped to the wrong conclusion and stuck with it.
