Default 2000 BMW 528i e39 with an M3 engine

I recently purchased a 2000 BMW 528i e39. From what I was told the I6 engine from an M3 *should* fit. Has anyone had any experience swapping engines like this or know if it'll work? Would it be a pain to do? My goal is to swap engines and eventually put an ESS supercharger on. I guess another question would be if the stock tranny will take that kind of punishment. Any ideas?

Any suggestions and/or recommendations would be welcomed, thanks.

From what I understand the S54 engine from the M3 is a real pain in the butt to swap. try asking this question in m3forum.com

I haven't Dynoed it yet, but I'll estimate around 280-300RWHP.

If it is a pain for you car guru's to swap it is out of the question for me then. I'm more of a computer guy and really don't know too much about cars. I guess if it is too difficult to get an S53B32 in there then I should just throw on a turbo or supercharger. Any recommendations rather than going the brand new VF Tech or ESS route? Cheapest I saw (VF) was $5k for a +6 boost bringing it from 193 to 309 hp.

uuummm, buy a japanese car?

no but um, you can try the other V8's BMW has to offer, they're most likely way cheaper than the S54 too.

I don't think a V8 will fit, I'll likely need to go with an inline 6. The one out of the M3 is the biggest I've found that could be compatible but if it is going to be a complete pain to do it might just be better to put an ESS supercharger on, a decent cat-back, manifold, etc.

If anyone else has upgraded their 528i e39 I'd love to hear some tips.

Isn't that generation M5 a V8? in which case, a V8 will fit.

A V8 isn't much longer than a I6. Just wider.

I was thinking the same thing... Worth looking into! If you're lucky you can find someone parting out their car.

Interesting. So you guys would recommend the M5 engine in the 528i over the M3? I'll read up on it, thanks.
