This is a good start.

Lots of friendly advice here.

Watch TV shows about cars, read books & magazines, hang out with people who do car stuff, go to races with them, and feel free to ask "dumb" questions, we all started not knowing anything.

front wheel drive turbo mopars from the 1980's. owned a lemon, at the time it aggravated me so badly, having to work on that old lebaron seemingly every weekend. but looking back it really set me up well for the car I own now, that doesn't need much work other than modding

I guess i've just learned from talking to people about them..i took a small engines class my freshman year in high school so that taught me the basics. From there i guess I've figured most of it out.

POWERTRAIN = Engine > Torque converter > Transmission > Transfer case (if 4wheel drive) > Driveshaft(s) > Differential > Wheels.

Radiator keeps car cool.

Oil lubricates.

Alternator uses power from your engine to supply power to everything else, and charge the battery.

Fuel pump pumps fuel.

Yeah. That's the bare basics.

You missed two of the most important parts!
Cigarette lighter gets hot.
Stereo gets loud.

But yeah, the best way to learn is to do it yourself. If you have a car problem, instead of taking it to a mechanic, call around, find a friend who knows how to do it, and see if he'll help you do it for a beer and a pizza. (I've yet to find a mechanic who charges less than a beer and a pizza - and you can always take it in to the shop later if you and your friend can't figure it out.) Like most of us who came here from OCN, I knew about PCs long before I knew about cars - I know a guy who knows a lot about cars, but nothing about computers, so I'd call him when I had car questions, he'd call me when he had computer questions. It worked out great.

EDIT: Oh, and don't forget to buy a Haynes manual for whatever car you're working on - it makes life a lot easier.

Agreed with the Hayne's manual part. Those can be had for $30 at Autozone. They'll make your life way easier.
