Default heres a question for ya car techies!

ok so i MIGHT buy a 300zx n/a for 800 bucks

it ran perfectly *i used to see it all the time* and now i don't. i found out that the owner went to drive it and it just plain out wouldn't start.

now me and my friend think its the starter, as all the electrical still works. or could it possibly be a bad engine? it's been sitting for roughly 6 months or maybe less.

So what do you guys think? starter or what?

Not starting =|= a bad starter. If the engine will still crank, the starting system is likely fine.

There's a myriad of reasons it's DOA. I'd check the fuel pump fuse/relay, if that's burned out it's a 20 dollar repair.

Is the engine cranking at all? If it's cranking and not starting, you might have a snapped timing belt/chain on your hands. Snapped timing = DO NOT BUY.

Maybe not related to the starting issue, but if you are considering buying that car be aware that they have a bad reputation for head gaskets.

Now if the head gasket was bad enough it COULD fill a cylinder with coolant and prevent it from cranking.

You need to first try to turn the engine by hand, or with a wrench. If it doesn't turn I defiantly wouldn't buy it.

If it does turn buy hand you need to listen for a click at the starter when turning the key, that could be a bad starter or poor battery connections.

If it cranks but doesn't fire then you could have something else like no power to the fuel pump, or the pumps dead. Or it could be a broken timing belt (don't buy!)

Not to mention the myriad of fuses and other electrical woes. Bad coil(s) could cause a nostart, for example.

we need more info what exactly will it do and won't do? Just saying it won't start people are just rolling the mechanics dice.

well it was running fine, but when we try and turn it on we can see a small spark we are gonna try and hotwire it or whatever and see if it turns on.

Is it turning over? Is making a loud click when it tries to turn over? Is it spinning but really fast or slow? Does it start to catch but die? Where are you seeing the spark?

Remember the three things you need, well four things really, to get a car running: fuel, spark, air, timing
