Default 93 lincoln towncar issue

let me give you the back story. went on vacation this summer. car made it 400 miles just fine with no issues. then all of a sudden it died. like the engine just shut off. i was doing about 75 when it happened. i still had power steering until i hit about 35. it didnt want to restart right away i had to let it sit for a few minutes but it kept happening. i pulled the gas cap off and it drove a little better but was still dying. let it sit over night and it still did it the next day.

well coming back from vacation it died a few times but then i figured out the problem is that i could only drive about 68 and after i set my cruise for that i made it most of the way back with it dying only a few times.

this was several months ago and the problem has gotten worse. i can drive 58 all day long maybe with no problem but when i get on the interstate and i go above 62 is after about 8 miles it will die. or it will not die and i stop but then on the way back it will die. so i went from being able to drive 68 to having to drive 58.

when i set idle the engine seams to pulse sometimes and the lights will pulse by getting dimmer then going back to there normal brightness. this will happen and stop lights sometimes too.

Does it just up and die? Or does it putt out and dog for a little and then die?

Sounds like a charging problem if the lights are affected. If the voltage drops low enough the fuel pump will not pump enough to keep fuel to the injectors.

Put a voltmeter on the battery when it's running, you should have about 13.5 volts. If not then have the alternator checked.

it just dies. it is interesting because when i have the cruise control on after it dies i can feel the pedal go to the floor because the car is trying to get going faster.

sounds like a good idea. i might pull the alternator and have it tested.

I suspect a ignition problem possibly distributor, crank or cam sensor, ignition control module etc. I believe your car doesn't have a cam sensor but may have a sensor in it's place can't seem to remember what ford called it though. The pump will run fine on 12V and if the alt was low the battery would loose charge and need to be jumped after dying. I've seen a few times where a Crank sensor will loose signal at high rpm's and the problem will only get worse. If it where my car I would start here. Usually when this happens the car will die and cost to stop but will restart when the key is cycled.

also try cleaning the battery and ground contacts with sand paper, to make sure they are making good contact. Have you changed your spark plugs, ignition coil, and wires any time recently? especially when you're getting a rough idle.

If the engine is falling to idle properly this will cause varing voltage which will cause lights to pulse. Being that the idle thing is intemetent I would again suspect a electrical problem in the ignition system. A good way to test this would be drive the car in first and see if it cuts out at low speed but around the same rpm's. I wouldn't try this in idle because it can often take having a load on the motor.

I had a somewhat similar issue (certain speeds were fine, others caused the car to run very rough) and it ended up being the MAF sensor. Not saying that's what it is, but it's worth considering.

Usally a MAF won't quiet unless it has a shorted wire which is spiking the ECU but it can cause power loss and poor driveability
